I loved the concept of this book so much more than the execution. I love a good alternate history, and I was so intrigued by the premise of this book. Unfortunately, I have only a very rudimentary knowledge of Judaism and no knowledge of Kabbalah, and I feel that because those facets were not at all explained, I was not the primary audience for this work. However, I will pass it along to friends of mine who are better versed.
This is a fascinating novel, with rich imagery and an adept use of language. I love the plot line and idea behind the story. The author shares their vivid imagination wonderfully with the reader.
I have much respect for an author that can seamlessly blend alternative history with a steampunk/fantasy feel. This book is so well researched, I felt immersed in multiple cultures throughout its pages. It was a slower start, but by the end, I wasn't ready to say goodbye.
Excellent read! The author did an amazing job in providing backstory for the characters. This book grabbed and held my attention.
The premise of this book was enough to make it intriguing, and it has been a good one to hook library patrons on, especially when they love both Judaica and historical fiction and an element of fantasy - I would have liked for the characters to be fleshed out a little better, but this was interesting.
