Good read. Liked the different characters and story flow. Like books set in different times in history and getting an author's perspective of that time.
The Nutmeg Tree is a light, frothy novel, a relaxing feel-good read, perfect for journeys. Its heroine, Julia, is really a thoroughly bad lot, in a likeable sort of way, utterly feckless, a woman who, finding herself a widow, will leave her child with its grandparents because she wants to pursue her career. Although that's probably just as well - the respectable option for the time, to be taken care of by her parents-in-law, would have led to disaster, as Julia is much too lively to settle down to demure widowhood. So it's to be expected, when she is asked to visit her now-adult daughter and help persuade the grandparents that Susan should be allowed to marry the man of her choice, that nothing will go smoothly, and Julia will find herself in all kinds of scrapes before there's any chance of a happy ending.
Sharp's writing catches the perfect note, she's never judgmental about Julia, so you know there will be the required happy ending, although how it will be achieved isn't always entirely clear. The writing, in fact, is as ebullient as our heroine.
