In Moscow 1995, Nikolai Aven works for the Federal Security Service in Russia. He and his partner, Vari Vlasenko, are senior investigators in the Directorate of Economic Crimes. They also work with Jack Hartman, an American CIA agent, passing classified documents.

A man drops off a shopping bag from a designer clothing store to Nikolai’s home. His wife, Natalia believes it is from her husband for their anniversary. Senior officials get suspicious of the bag and find out where it is. They arrest Nikolai and send him to jail. Nine years later, Nikolai escapes and wants revenge for what happened to him. He believes the betrayal goes deep and seeks the truth. He also wants to find his wife and daughter, Larissa.

The story has a steady pace, the characters are developed, and it is written in the third person point of view. There are violent scenes but not so graphic. If you like spy stories with plot twists, you will like this book.

This was a suspenseful, action packed story of the state of Russia. It definitely applies to world events today, and is very well written.
Many thanks to Eqis Publishing and to NetGalley for providing me with a galley in exchange for my honest opinion.
