Absolutely loved this book! I read it a while ago, and did not realize I did not review it here!
The characters are so rich. While it takes a while to get to know them, it’s worth it. Bittie is the best! Allie struggles hard to stay strong - for Sammy and for herself.
I love that there are hints as to “whodunnit”, but enough questions to nit truly be sure until the end. My kind of mystery.
LOVE this story! Jennifer Jaynes reels you in and doesn’t let you go until the very last written word.
This series is so good you won’t want to put them down. Definitely a must read.
Keep em’ coming JJ!
Scrolling through my kindle looking for something to sink my teeth into, I came across a Jennifer Jaynes book and decided to read it. I have to admit reading it did make me feel a little sad as the author died in sad circumstances a couple of years ago. This book begins with two twin sisters Zoe and Carrie wake up to blood everywhere in their home and their parents dead. The book then jumps to the girls being found and taken to a foster home where they meet Allie. Allie was raised by Bitty when her family was killed and now she lives with Bitty and her small son Sammy. During this time, Zoe and Carrie go through the stages of grief and secrets as Carrie has decided to stop talking and Zoe has started to attach herself obsessively to Allie but Sammy isn't happy about this as it's his mother, not hers. When more people end up murdered and Sammy injured, Allie realizes things aren't right with Zoe and that caring may put her in danger. If you love twisted thrillers and edgy mysteries, then you will love Jennifer Jaynes books as once you start, you won't be able to put them down and It will keep you guessing till the very last chapter.
I can’t imagine living with the fear that the mental illness in your family will catch up with you. And that is just the beginning.....This was a fast paced, disturbing story and I couldn’t put it down. The entire story was one wild train ride until the very end.
Many thanks to Thomas & Mercer and to NetGalley for providing me with a galley in exchange for my honest opinion.
This is the third book in the Strangers series, but you can easily read them as standalone stories. Allie Callahan has finally got some happiness in her life. Adopted by Bitty Callahan, they are happily living together with Allie's young son Sammy. Allie is stronger than she's ever been, even though Sammy's father is still flitting in and out of her life. She is determined never to be like her mother or brother, who were both mentally ill, serial killers. When a local couple are murdered, Bitty fosters their twin daughters who are now orphans. What did the twins see or hear that night? Zoe is talking very little, Carrie is not talking at all. Zoe does murmur something about her mother's boyfriend being at the house. As strange things start happening, Allie is worried that there is a stalker involved, putting them all in some danger.
This is a psychological thriller, that had some suspense and some twists that kept me guessing. I have read all the books in the series and enjoyed the first two more than this one. This one seemed to be more of the same and left me feeling kind of meh. I pretty much figured out what was happening about halfway through the story, which might be why I did not find it as suspenseful as some other readers did. The ending was not what I had expected, but it still did not blow me away. Overall this was a good story, just not great.
I could read Jaynes’ grocery list - one of the most underrated authors I currently enjoy. The writing skill level, the pull of the story & characters..... read this, y’all!!
I would like to thank NetGalley, Thomas and Mercer, and Jennifer Jaynes for an advanced copy of Don't Say a Word for an honest review.
The third book in the Stranger Series Don't Say a Word continues with Allie Callahan living with her young son and her adoptive mother Bitty. Allie is content and happy for the first time in her troubled life when Bitty is called to emergency foster twelve year old twin girls found hiding in the closet of the family home, the scene of the gruesome murders of their parents. Strange things begin to happen, hang up phone calls, someone watching from the woods. Allie must fight her own fears to keep her small family safe as the mystery of what happened that fateful night to the girls parents comes to light.
I enjoyed reading Don't Say a Word and recommend it. Not a high action suspense novel, this book is still a very suspenseful psychological read.
Thank you to NetGalley and Thomas & Mercer for this free readers edition. In exchange I am providing an honest review.
In this title Jaynes continues Allie's story from book 2 but in her new location of East Texas with her adoptive mother, Miss Bitty. Bitty is still taking in foster kids and Allie has a four year old son. It's been 6 years since they left Louisiana behind for good. The newest foster kids in the house are twin sisters who were found in their closet hiding from their dead parents in the other room. One twin, Carrie, isn't talking and the other, Zoe, only speaks when spoken to. Normally Allie helps Bitty out with the practical parts of caring for foster kids but she stays away from the emotional parts. Yet something about these girls is making Allie reconsider her usual modus operandi. Sammy, Allie's son, warms to the twins and despite their parents killer being on the loose everyone begins to settle into a routine of sorts and begin trudging the long road of healing from such a trauma. Yet as time goes on the twins start behaving differently and a rift is growing between the two of them. Is it the stress of seeing their parents dead or something more? Allie, Bitty, and others try to help the girls come to terms with and cope with the loss of their parents. The problem is there is still someone out there who is hoping they don't say a word.
The third book in this series by Jaynes was just as good of a read as the first two books in the series. It can be read stand alone but I highly recommend reading books 1 & 2 first to get some background on Allie especially. I'm starting to catch on to Jaynes extremely subtle foreshadows and this time around I caught on to who the killer probably was sooner than I did in the previous two titles. But I'm not letting myself get cocky, who knows what book 4 brings and if I'll be able to catch her excellent foreshadowing.Oh, yes there is a book 4 and yes I began it the moment I read the last word of this title. I am loving this author and series!
This book was all you could want in a murder/suspense and then some. It had the best twisty ending that I've read in ages. This is one of those books that even if laid down, it's constantly on your mind. I didn't realize that this was book 3 in a trilogy until writing the review so it can definitely stand by itself. Now though, I get to go back and read the first two books in the series.
