I unfortunately was not able to read this book. I was excited when ever I had chosen to download or pick this book up on Netgalley. However, time moves by so quickly and I never got to read it.
DNF-ed. Another surprise DNF for me. I was expecting more from the book and it simply didn’t manage to give the flair it promised. The story felt bland and didn’t interest me enough to finish it.
This didn’t work for me for a number of reasons. For one, the title is misleading. It’s cute, but not accurate. No one is dating dead guys in this book. There’s just a university student who acts like she’s 12, and keeps blushing at the male ghosts that she accidentally brought back from whatever purgatory they were stuck in.
When it comes to the magic in this book, not only does it take a bit of a backseat to things like pregnant friends and what everyone is going to eat, it’s also super confusing and vague. Nothing is ever really explained in a palpable way, or even in a way that is more common to what we see in other pop culture of this kind in order to make it easier to understand without explanation.
While I did find a lot of lame gender stuff in this book (girls are only feminine in dresses, all women cry when they don’t get their way, women love to create drama, etc…,) my biggest issue was really how juvenile it was. The characters, the dialogue, the scenes, the reactions… it was like an after-school special for 8-year-olds.
The synopsis says it’s classified as NA, but can be YA and read by anyone in 10th grade or older. I’ve yet to read a NA novel that didn’t have super mature themes and scenes. This was not that.
If this innocent kid thing is your jam, you’ll probably like this. It’s just light and fluffy and doesn’t take much thought to read. But for me, it’s was cheesy and didn’t reflect what I know of college kids. I was a college kid. And a teenager. And I parent two teenagers. Regular kids are not this “oh shucks, golly gosh” innocent trope, and I don’t understand why we have to write for them that way.
Good day! Before anything else, I would like to extend my deepest, sincerest gratitude for sending me a digital review copy of this book (via NetGalley). Thank you very much for the opportunity!
Unfortunately, I am sad to say that I have lost interest in this particular title, and consequently, I have decided against finishing it. Forcing myself to finish a book I am disinterested in (solely for the sake of finishing it) can only negatively impact the entirety of my reading experience, which, in turn, could result in me writing an unfairly negative review. That is a circumstance I hope to avoid. With that said, I believe that the best course of action is for me to simply not read it and to refrain from publicly posting any feedback regarding this book.
I hope you understand where I'm coming from. Again, thank you for the lovely opportunity!
