Ever the Hunted is a charming and adventurous story with a sweet romance. Erin's writing is truly enchanting. She cast me under her spell of her beautiful, sweeping imagery and lively dialogue. I was so incredibly happy while reading that my cheeks hurt from smiling.
We love this series. I have recommended it to so many young adults. I love that it is action packed. It’s just good fun. 5/5 stars.
This was a DNF for me at about 20%. I found it an all-too-familiar blend of stories that have been told before: Robin Hood, The Hunger Games, etc. I couldn't connect with the main character, and the world she exists within wasn't fully fleshed out. There wasn't anything unique that tied me to the narrative. Maybe I'll try again down the road. It seems like it would be great for people that like general YA fantasy with heroines who fight their enemies with bows and arrows while dealing with their feelings for the helper boy that goes with them in a generic Euro-centric world; but it just wasn't for me.
I was really excited for this YA fantasy but it's clear that the genre has become saturated with mediocre works. I'm sad to say that EVER THE HUNTED fit in the mediocrity pile, with a special snowflake running amok and a heavy basis of romance driving major points of the narrative. There's a lot of telling, not showing, which didn't add to the characterization.
There's a lot of potential points in the plot that could have added to the action, but instead it's ignored in favor of relationship drama. Cohen's an interesting romantic interest, but doesn't really have depth. Finally, the implied love triangle in the next book doesn't quite incite me to pick it up.
Thank you for the review copy!
Oh, I loved this book! Britta was such a bad ass female character.
The journey she goes on will keep you guessing and is full of entertaining events.
I enjoyed it so much and look forward to more titles from this author.
I did not finish - I have tried reading this book on multiple occasions and just could not get into it.
Thanks for the opportunity to read this. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to get into it. I will not be posting a negative review on Goodreads.
I loved this book! The full review will be posted soon at kaitgoodwin.com/books! Thank you very much for this wonderful opportunity to connect books to their readers!
I wasn't able to finish this book, so I decided not to review it on my site or any of the major retailers/Goodreads.
This is one of those 'didn't work for me but the kids will really love it' type of books. The swoony guy who says swoony things, a secret past, magic, ole! It's fine. Predictable, for sure, but fine.
Although not the most original YA fantasy out there Ever the Hunted was a quick and fun read. I liked Britta, she was a determined and resourceful main character. The romance between her and Cohen was sweet and well paced, Plot wise I enjoyed the twists and turns, and I thought the world building was great, too.
Overall, it was an entertaining read.
I'm so disappointed. Usually I love all the fantasy books I read, because it's my favorite kind of books but here I couldn't finish the book. The writing style didn't seduce me. And the story... it was déjà-vu. A lot of books have the same things in it: a kingdom, princess or characters on the run, a romance... and usually I don't mind if the book is interesting, and well written.
Everything about this book was so predictable it became boring.
I didn't want to torture myself and read more that I already read.
I'm so sorry I didn't like the book.
Ever the Hunted was amazing. It's full of drive, imagery, adventure, interesting characters and passion. I read it in two sittings. I can't wait to see the direction and how the rest of the story unfolds in the sequel. Thank you for giving me a chance to read it.
The first book in a fantasy duology, Erin Summerill’s Ever the Hunted is a predictable tale about a girl with incredibly rare magic powers she’s unaware of and an unlikeable love interest who may or may not have killed her father. While Ever the Hunted had some bright spots, it suffers from incredibly slow pacing and an insufferable love story.
I just could not get into the story. It sounded like a book I would love to read, but I kept putting it down to read something else.
Since this book hasn’t been out for a full year, my review will be free of spoilers!
This has been on my shelf for a while now and I’ve been interested in the concept. I have the opportunity to read Ever the Brave early, so that gave me motivation to pick this one up so I can keep up with my deadlines.
We’re introduced to Britta, who is now by herself since her father’s murder and the disappearance of her friend/crush Cohen. She’s instantly captured when she is discovered for poaching, but instead of a hanging, she is given an opportunity to find her father’s killer, which happens to be Cohen himself. It’s a life for a life if she wants her freedom.
Details
Like the previous book I read, details seemed to be more focused on the emotional aspect, especially with Britta herself. She is dealing with a lot of betrayal and confusion when it comes to her feelings for Cohen, her father’s murder, and her true heritage. There are a lot of secrets surrounding her and they surely don’t end when the book concludes with a cliffhanger. Her emotions only get more confused and stronger when Cohen appears early in this book; earlier than I expected, at least. For everything else that happened in the book plot-wise, it seemed to be a bit weak. It didn’t excite me as much as I thought it would, judging from the summary itself. It just didn’t resonate with that kind of wow factor, you know? However, the ending does still pique my interest for the second book.
Britta
Britta kind of got to me at times, but I guess I shouldn’t really rag on that. This girl has a lot of baggage on her shoulders. Her father has been murdered, she is an outcast because of her family line, her friend has abandoned her after she confessed her feelings, and she now must find who murdered her father while battling with so many feelings left and right. A lot of shitty stuff happens to this girl throughout the entire book with very few bright spots leftover. Her personality is a little reckless, but I guess this has to happen considering she is strong-minded and in need of some closure. She is that kind of YA female character that goes against the rules. For example, trekking through the forest by herself. I always love a character like this, but she still has a hint of that vulnerability and weakness leftover in the end. Let’s hope she gets over that quickly.
Cohen
In my mind, I pictured him as one of Sarah J. Maas’ sexy MCs, just without the elf ears and such. Purely human. We don’t get a vast description of his physical form, but just the way he handles himself and the way he talks and interacts with Britta is incredibly sexy. He is top notch for a book boyfriend. Husband, maybe? Besides the physical part, Cohen is vulnerable throughout most of the book because of his feelings for Britta and because he is focused on reducing his younger brother from the war. He likes to put up a hard mask when he needs to, but it all comes down with Britta and, probably, only her. Trust is an important aspect to him and, stemming from the ending, I imagine that will be crumbled a bit, if not completely. I got you, baby.

No words. My heart...
The Bottom Line
Like I said, the plot-line was kind of slow and didn’t really wow me or anything. The ending kept my interest piqued as well as the characters. It was just the pacing sometimes, you know? I do think this was really well written, though. I went in expecting an adventure and I’ll say honestly that it did meet my expectations at least to the 85% mark.
Oh, yeah. Cohen is bae.
Unfortunately, I DNFed this book in the first 15%. The tone the author set made the MC come across as petty and juvenile.
A promising start to the series but it had one too many cliches and tropes for my liking. It was an easy read but did not leave me feeling wowed.
Thanks to Netgalley and Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Children’s Book Group for giving me this book to review.
Ever the Hunted is an enjoyable YA fantasy book which is fast paced and full of action, romance and magic. However, it is nothing new in this genre and is a bit predictable.
Britta is skilled, determined and competent but also is distrustful of people. Cohen is your average YA hero with nothing new as he is brave, loyal and protective. However, I wish we got to know Lief a bit more as I really liked him and he was an interesting character.
I was not a fun of the ending and the hinted love triangle in the next book Ever the Brave. I would recommend Ever the Hunted to fans of Slumber by Samantha Young and Threats of Sky and Sea by Jennifer Ellision.
This is not a bad book, but it is a book like a thousand others. I couldn't even finish it, that's how banal it was. I so think revenge plots are overdone. You know, the main character wanting to avenge their parents - they seek retribution. They have a vendetta. It can be exciting in a lot of cases, but not in this one.
