Herbie goes on a grand adventure when his mom sends him out foraging for the first time. His journey takes him through the woods and snow before eventually leading him right back home. This beautifully illustrated book is a great fit for the toddler - K crowd.
This was adorably illustrated and that is initially what attracted me to this book. Plus, who wouldn't love a hedgehog protagonist? This tells the tale of Herbie, who leaves his mother's home for the first time to learn to forage. He struggles at first, but in the end has a great adventure, but of course coming home again is the best part. I did have a few issues with this plot, however: first, I felt that his mother should have taught him to forage first before making him go out all alone - don't mammals mostly stick together to learn first? Also, it is implied that Herbie is gone for an entire year (each page spread on his adventure seems to illustrated a different season) which seemed a long time just to learn to forage, and a long time to be away from home. I don't know that much about wild hedgehogs, but I would hope that it would portray their lives accurately even in fiction.
