Art, religion, love, politics, and the creation of empire collide in this unusual novel. The centre of this narrative is a duel in the form of a tennis match between artist Caravaggio and the poet Quevedo. Fascinating as this encounter is of itself, we are also transported into the wider, sixteenth century world of Italy, Spain and Mexico as the match progresses. Alvaro Enrigue wears his considerable scholarship lightly as this short novel is hugely entertaining and highly recommended.
