I really didn't enjoy this book. It was depressing and just felt like it missed the mark. Chelsea clearly was going through it in the story, but I never connected with her.

I tried reading this knowing it was out of my comfort zone, meaning not the type of book I’m usually in to. But in the end I really wasn’t a fan. Just an average book in my opinion.

I read this book a while ago after forgetting to download it here, so I went and bought my own copy. While I enjoyed the author's writing and storytelling, I found Chelsea to be a difficult character to like. Although the victim of judgement herself, I found her to be incredibly judgemental at times. I do like a coming of age style story and I enjoyed the flow, however could not get over my disdain for the main character making it hard to enjoy at times.

I wasn't able to finish this book, but the message throughout was well-thought out. Chelsea was a good character who easily comes to life. Can't wait to read more by this author!

Oh, what a truly lovely, but awful, but brilliant, but heartbreaking book.

Nice Girls Endure by Chris Stryuk-Bonn is the story of Chelsea, a young girl who is overweight. That isn’t all she is but it is the first thing that people see and the last thing that they seem to remember about her. They don’t know that she loves musicals, shoes, painting her toenails and spending time with her dad. Most people can’t (or won’t) look past her exterior.

When things start to change for Chelsea she learns that sometimes the good comes with some bad – now she has to learn that she doesn’t deserve (or need to accept) the bad.

I was genuinely taken aback by this young adult novel. At times, I felt broken by the cruelty that Chelsea faced. At times I had to put the book down because it was too much to take. I am so glad that I have read it and that I get to encourage others to read it to because in the age of Instagram and body shaming we need to start loving ourselves more and more importantly we need to start being kind to each other.

Nice Girls Endure is a truly spectacular piece of writing.

I really appreciated the message behind this novel! I thought that it was very well thought out and well-written. The characters were fairly level-headed and innocent, but didn't have much of a personality. I wish there was more substance to this novel in terms of relating to and loving the characters.

This book is broken into a bajillion bite-sized chapters and in my opinion this was a smart move. It works perfectly for the story. Rather than feeling obligated to fatten up the chapters with length and mundane filler the author instead has no qualms about beginning and ending each scene succinctly providing only the important bits, sort of like a movie. The story covers the expanse of a school year and the short chapters help create the accurate feeling of how time flies by (and it also makes reading this book feel much quicker). We watch in short snippets how Chelsea has been, is, changes, and may become. Flashes, that’s what we are given, flashes into the life of a heavy set teen with an earth shattering singing voice and apparently model-worthy feet.

If I’m going to continue trying to be honest about books then I admit that I have conflicting emotions about this book. It’s a story about bullying and therefore I feel obligated to sing its praises, but that wouldn’t be 100% truthful. There were moments that I enjoyed, I smiled, I laughed, I envied, I avoided, I chased, I rolled my eyes, I doubted, I sighed, I cheered, and I ho-hummed. Chelsea’s is a complex story and I appreciate that because people are beautifully complex. And, I dunno, maybe it’s because I’m an adult now (as much I hate to accept that reality) but there were several moments I didn’t understand – moments where I sighed past because I know that when she is older she too will look back on those moments with a different perspective.

I was given an ARC in exchange of an honest review. Thank you to the publisher and the author.

Nice Girls Endures follows our main character who is Chelsea Duvay who is a overweight teen girl that has many talents but, you guessed it, people only talk about her weight.

In a society where body image is discussed every single day this book is important to show that there ARE fat teens girls out there and they deserve to be represented.

Unfortunately my laptop in which I was reading this book stopped working so I couln't finish reading the book and it wouldn't be correct to review it without reading the whole thing, in my opinion.

From what I read, I enjoyed.

Switch Press and NetGalley provided me with an electronic copy of Nice Girls Endure. This is my honest opinion of the book.

Being an overweight teenager can make high school mostly unbearable. When Chelsea Duvay meets Melody Smiles, however, her life starts to change in both positive and negative ways. Having been the one to stick mostly to the shadows, Chelsea ends up getting some unwanted attention. Being bullied almost daily is one thing, but the event that occurs after the school dance is more than Chelsea can bear.

People come in all shapes, all sizes, all personalities, and all temperaments. Chelsea is a teenager who just wants to live her own life and not be bothered, ridiculed, or bullied. My favorite character in the book is Melody, as she not only provides the support that Chelsea needs, but also makes her realize that the sentiment goes both ways. Nice Girls Endure raises important social issues such as bullying, sexual assault, and self esteem issues due to social anxiety. The author did a great job of characterization and created an impactful story for Chelsea. I highly recommend Nice Girls Endure to teen readers who have either suffered in silence or have bullied someone for being different. This book provides a great vehicle for parents to open a dialogue with their teens.
