I love a good heist story. This one was a fun young adult read. I enjoyed the characters in this book. The pacing was fast and the book entertaining. Cute story.
Smash & Grab by Amy Christine Parker was fun, but I think I was expecting too much. I loved the Heist Society books, so I'm always looking for something similar. It can be dangerous to compare books like this, though, if the book that it's being compared to is just... way better. Things moved a little slowly for me, and I found the characters acting older than they're supposed to be. I just didn't believe them. I dunno. A fun idea, fun story, good writing. I just didn't love it as much as I wanted to.
I have tried to read this book 3 times now and it just doesn't stick anytime I pick it up. That said I am going to have just face the fact that this book is not for me. I wish it grabbed me more, but just a case of not you, its me.
I requested this one back in the day as I had every intention of reading it. However, its been years and I still haven't gotten around to it and while I feel guilty at not reviewing a book I think that I need to admit to myself that I won't be reading this one anytime soon....if at all.
This was outside of the usual genres that I read, but I loved this! I loved Ocean's Eleven and Heist Society, and I felt this was a good thing to read if you like those kind of movies and books. I felt like I could very clearly see the story playing out. Descriptions were just right, not too much or too little, and there was a good blend of funny moments, seriousness, and romance, Although I don't think there can ever be too much romance ;).
I made it to 21% before I threw in the towel on this book. It's not that I hate it, it's just not true to the classification. These characters do not read as if they are teens at all, if anything they sound like they are in the mid-twenties at the earliest. They talk about sexy outfits, their years of being adrenaline junkies, how they can't escape drowning responsibilities and it doesn't fit the mood the story was trying to set.
Also I am all good for an Ocean's 11 type of story...100% but it has to be done write. Banks know what numbers are on the bills stolen, they also have dye that is set to explode if things are disrupted without authorization...aka ruin the money. So while it seems to me like the author was trying to write something fun an witty, I also need an author who is going to put in the time and research to write a realistic story...at least give me something to work with here.
This started out pretty slow for me. Once it picked up the pace, I liked it a bit more. Lexi and Christian are the two main characters and both perspectives are represented in the story. Lexi is a rich kid who's dad is arrested for financial misdeeds. Christian is a Latino teen with big dreams but is mixed up with a gang. Their paths cross, and the story begins.
Lexi is a poor little rich girl, addicted to adrenaline pumping stunts and still reeling from her father’s arrest for embezzlement. Determined to uncover the true mastermind of her father’s criminal deeds, she dons a wig and disguise to intern at the bank her father once worked at.
Christian is a bad boy, one of the Romero Robbers that have been hitting up banks all over LA. However, he longs for UCLA and a better life for his family. His crew’s next target happens to be the bank that cute girl he ran into is working at.
When their worlds collide, these two teens will work together to both get what they want.
As soon as I saw the cover of this book, I knew I wanted to read it. I am one of those readers who love my teen adventure/spies type stories. Also when I originally saw this cover and book, I was still on a high from finishing the Pretty Crooked series, so I was all about "Heist and Robbery" type stories. The other thing that got me was that the tagline mentioned "Oceans Eleven" and I loved that movie series. The book starts out with wealthy girl Lexi and her group of friends jumping and parachuting from a building; they seem like a group of in the dark adrenaline junkies. For Lexi, it is an escape mechanism as she has just learned her father has gone to prison for bank fraud and her family have lost everything. On the other side of the tracks is Christian, he is a poorer neighborhood and has found his mates and him caught up with the local gangs. One thing leads to another, and they head to pull off a bank job which has the meeting of Lexi and Christian. Lexi believes her Dad was set-up by his boss and supposed friend, so she goes undercover as an intern for the bank to find out the truth and runs into Christian. One thing leads to another, and the pair finds themselves not only falling for one another but discovering that in a blackmail sort of way, that they can help out one another and so begins a joining of forces - each with their set of values, morals, and reasons behind what they are about to do. When the stakes get higher, will both teams still do their bit to pull off a successful heist or will Lexie's friends who have less to lose pull out? Find out in this awesome teen novel that fans of Heist Society by Ally Carter will love and enjoy as much as I did.
