A compelling and fascinating story, THE GATEKEEPER relates the heartbreaking story of the unsung Missy LeHand, considered the "first" female chief of staff. Little has been, up to now, written about Miss LeHand, but Kathryn Smith makes clear how vital she was to the presidency of FDR. And when he became wheelchair bound, he turned to LeHand for help running the government. To be able to read some of her letters is to see inside LeHand's truth and adds poignancy to the tale. A very well written bio. Fans of FDR, of unsuung women heroes, of the workings of the government during the reign of FDR will be delighted.
