Rachael Narins’ "Cast-Iron Cooking" is like that well-meaning friend who really wants you to embrace a rustic, back-to-basics lifestyle—but forgets that not everyone instinctively knows how to season a skillet without mild panic. This book is part history lesson, part how-to guide, and part recipe collection, all centered around the legendary durability (and occasional moodiness) of cast iron cookware. There’s a solid range of recipes, from the classic cornbread and fried chicken to dishes that make you rethink what a skillet can do. If you’ve ever looked at your cast iron and thought, "Can I really cook everything in this?", this book’s answer is a confident yes.
The information is useful, but the vibe leans more enthusiastic cast iron appreciation club than comprehensive cooking guide. There are some great tips on caring for your skillet (which, let’s be honest, can feel like adopting a pet with trust issues), but the instructions could be a little clearer for those who aren’t already in a committed relationship with their cookware. The recipes are solid, and while they don’t necessarily reinvent the (cast iron) wheel, they do make a strong case for using your skillet for more than just the occasional seared steak. Plus, Narins’ love for cast iron is infectious—by the time you’re done, you’ll feel a little guilty about every nonstick pan in your cabinet.
At 3.5 stars, "Cast-Iron Cooking" is a warm and enthusiastic love letter to the skillet that has survived generations of kitchen chaos. It’s a solid pick for anyone looking to expand their cast iron repertoire, though total beginners might wish for a little more hand-holding before attempting to sear something at 500 degrees. Still, if you’re even mildly cast iron curious, this book will have you eyeing your skillet with newfound respect—and possibly an urge to start cooking everything in it, just to see if you can.

Lots of yummy recipes using a cast iron skillet, I liked the variety. I tried the bean chili and have now made it multiple times.

Review placed on Goodreads and Amazon.
I really love Storey Publishing and review for them frequently. It is because of the quality of their books and Ms. Narin's Cast-Iron Cooking is a prime example of this.
While the traditional care of a cast iron skillet is included, it is the recipes that really make this book stand out. Interesting, unique breakfast to desserts recipes go beyond what is seen in other cast iron skillet recipe books I have reviewed. Recipes are simple and laid out well with photos to accompany most if not all. Ms. Narins even included some vegetarian recipes. However, they are very limited.
This book is definitely worth the purchase price, especially for the ebook version.

Great cookbook for new users of a cast iron pan! I just loved this! Made so many yummy recipes for my family and guests from this cookbook! Cannot recommend it enough!
