I really love Star Trek but graphic novels aren't my favorite medium. However, I did enjoy this one.
The artwork was great and the story arc reminds me of an episode of the show. Retelling the story in Klingon over the last few pages was an interesting choice, but as a reader who is unfamiliar with written Klingon, it felt kind of silly.
The Klingons are at it again! Klingons have always been one of the more interesting enemies the Federation has had to face, and the Enterprise deals with them head-on in the graphic novel Star Trek: Manifest Destiny. In this book, however, they are even more fearsome. A faction of Klingons are being led by a crazy leader devoid of the code of ethics and honor that normally makes a Klingon who they are. This atypical Klingon is determined to start his own empire and attacks the enterprise as a way of achieving that goal. The crew of the Enterprise, of course, does not take this sitting down.
I’m not a huge fan of the reboot of Star Trek (I have a hard time with many of the changes that were made to the characters we know and love from the original series) but the story of this graphic novel was interesting enough that I could get beyond that. It takes one of the best frenemies of the Federation and shows them as a three-dimensional civilization, with “good” members and “bad” members. This story has a great villain without villainizing the entire race, and a plot that kept me wanting to know how things would end.
