Great idea and concept for a book. A thoroughly enjoyable read. Highly recommended. .
Corrie Locke is an engaging character who I enjoyed reading about. The story is fast paced and well written and I would enjoy reading more about her.
This is a crazy, mixed-up book. The main character, Corrie Locke, a new lawyer who has just begun a job at a Hollywood studio, gets caught up in a murder mystery, mostly because of her reputation of working as a sleuth with her father, a famous PI. The story centers around Corrie’s under the radar investigation of the death of one of the studio’s employees. Initially, the death has been ruled a suicide, but many people believe it was a homicide, though no one has tried or been able to prove it thus far. Corrie is enlisted by a friend of the deceased to put the clues together to figure out whether the deceased committed suicide or was killed. The book does read quickly. The plot is interesting, and there are many twists and turns throughout. However, the setting and most of the characters are beyond ridiculous. How anyone can even begin to think any of those who work or involved with the studio work for a living is beyond me. Most of them do next to nothing, especially the females in the story. As a female, I was not happy about the picture of females presented. Corrie was strong at times, but made some terrible decisions and got caught up in some rather inane situations and events, so I wondered just how strong or intelligent she really was. In the story, there are two males, her oldest bestie Michael and his buddy James the Assistant DA, in whom she is obviously interested. However, none of their interactions comes across very well and definitely not very genuine. I just did not see the relationships developing or going anywhere. I spend a lot of time trying to figure what the author intended or where this was going. In addition, the other males in the story all seem to go “gaga” over anyone with a skirt. Meanwhile, the women, as I said, come across as silly, inane, and unable to perform even the simplest task without some reference to their nails, their hair, etc. The one female, other than Corrie, who does seem to have her wits about her, Veera, who becomes Corrie’s assistant at the studio as well as her sidekick, is developed better than the others, but still lacks the something that makes her outstanding. There are times when the author wanted, I think, to make her funny, but never quite succeeded. I do not see her as the Lula to Stephanie, as depicted in Janet Evanovich’s Stephanie Plum series. Lula has far more going for her and is far funnier than Veera. I suspect the author wanted to make her a Lula type character, but, as I see it, failed badly. The story is funny, but goes too far, in my opinion. The studio where Corrie works as well as the characters who work there go beyond ridiculous, which makes the humor in the book way over the top. Honestly, I am not sure which type reader would enjoy this book. Obviously, may reviewers did. I am also not sure whether I would move on to another book, if this is the start of a new series. I received this from NetGalley to read and provide an honest review.
A well thought out and executed murder "who done it, with a whole host of off the charts hilariously zany characters, that'll actually keep you guessing until the end. The secondary characters were well developed and believable as crazy, eccentric entertainment people...their craziness, along with Corrie and her ability to turn on a dime when making decisions and defusing situations, made this one story that was a delight to read. I hope that this was the first book in the series because I'd really like to see more from Corrie, Michael, and James.
