College Hockey Romance.
I have read this author's hockey romances before and this one was good.
Jacob Flass was on his way to become NFL draft until he was involved in incident that kick him off his Canadian team and send him over the border to Baynard College. He had to stay out of trouble and abide his time until he gets drafted. He was trying his best to stay out of trouble until he saw Skylar. When Skylar makes advances, he remembers to stay away from girls and he denies her.
Skylar's roommates dragged her out to a party and she met out of her league hockey player Jacob. Sparks are flying between them but when he denies her, she won't forget.
Jacob and Skylar keeps running into each other and they will have to figure out if they can stand each other after their awkward meet cute.
This isn't just about college sports romance. This one deals with consent, suicide and how to deal with all those issues. There are many side characters I would love to read.
Thanks to Netgalley and author for ARC.
So I’m back with another Kelly Jaimeson book, so of course that means another super hot hockey book, and for someone that is not a big fan of sports romance, I can’t seem to get enough of Kelly’s books.
But I will be 100% transparent and while I absolutely loved Jacobs character, I struggled with Skyler’s character and for me not to mesh with the lead female role, made me struggle somewhat with the book and whether or not I want to continue in this new series
I really waned to love this book. As a fan of Kelly Jamieson's ACES series, I was looking forward to starting a new series from her. In the past, Ive enjoyed many New Adult books and thought this one would be right up my alley. However, it felt a bit too preachy and high school PSA-play instead of a new adult romance.
My number one reason for reading is escape. That's not say that I mind having authors use controversial current subjects in their books, but I prefer for them to be included in a seamless way and for them not to overwhelm and take away from the story. And ultimately, I prefer for it not to feel like I attended a seminar on that subject.
Kelly Jamieson's writing was good with her usual mix of intriguing characters, humor and steamy scenes. I liked the characters, enjoyed their candid moments and chemistry, I just wish their romance didn't take a back seat to the subject matter.
Shut Out is the first hockey romance I think I've ever read that I had to double check the author to make sure it wasn't a male writer. Many writers have written hockey romance, and a LOT of them were quite good, but this writer (a) knows A LOT about hockey and (b) knows men.
Let's talk about this.
(A) I can tell that this book wasn't "researched" for authenticity. This book gave the distinct flavor of someone who WATCHES a lot of hockey. Someone who understands and enjoys the game. Someone who knows a lot about behind-the-scenes stuff (practices, weightlifting, etc but not just that those things EXIST, but how they work). Someone conversant with the terminology. Someone who appreciates the way hockey players move, think, strategize, etc. Someone who watches a lot of player interviews. So, Ms. Jamieson, if this doesn't describe you, then my hat is off to you because you convinced me, completely.
and
(B) The male voice - Jacob's - was spot-on. I spent a lot (read: A LOT) of time around male athletes in college and this voice was very true to a college male athlete for me. I could completely envision my various college boyfriends and their friends and teammates saying and thinking everything Jacob did. Maybe with the exception of all the 'consent' stuff, because that terminology wasn't around - or being as widely used, perhaps - during the early 00s (and now I have dated myself), aka, the dinosaur age. While I'm at it, I will say that the college/student athlete atmosphere was pretty good too. I think a couple of authors - looking at you specifically, Elle Kennedy and Kristen Callihan- have really set the bar high for new adult romance about student athletes so I'm pleased to say that Kelly Jamieson is joining that club.
Skylar, the female MC of this story, wowed me a little less than Jacob did. For one thing, I didn't love the way her backstory was teased out (Jacob's either TBH) throughout the book then dropped at the very end. There was enough going on with her baggage that we didn't need to have that added to it. I also felt that at times the consent lectures got a little heavy and dragged down the book. I understand the importance but it really was a lead weight in the dialogue which was otherwise mostly excellent.
Nonetheless, overall this book was very well done and I enjoyed it. Would recommend and would also be interested to see how the author overhauls Ella's troubled character arc.
Received an ARC from NetGalley for an honest review.
I struggled with this one. I appreciated the story, but there were parts that didn't mesh so well. I needed more of Skylar and Ella's friendship for one thing. Also, the love scenes were...interesting. The hair aspect really threw me and probably made me dock a star because I had a hard time with that. I would give this series another try, but I'm not sure. I've read other works by Jamieson so my general "meh" feeling abut this one is throwing me.
I don't think I knew I even had this book on NetGalley because I don't even have it marked as to be read on GR. Doing this to remove from my shelf.
This author's voice/writing style doesn't work for me. I have tried numerous books of hers and it just doesn't work for me. I have found many hockey romances that work for me, so I know the sport romance side of it isn't a "new" thing for me - but I don't really connect with this author's style.
The depth really isn't there for me and when I try to look deeper into the storyline, I'm just not feeling it. I like being able to sink into a book, to get lost in the words, and be able to fall in love with the characters, and on these books I just couldn't.
As much as i wanted to enjoy this book the story came out a bit to cheesy for me. There was no depth to the characters. No development meant a really long and tedious read.
I have to be honest, I am not a huge fan of rape in books I read. Even if it is a PSA for rape. I have really liked this series and the fact it centers around hockey. I just didn't love this one all that much.
I enjoyed this book. It pulled you right in and kept you turning the pages. This book was well written and I had no issues following the story.
I don't know what I expected from this book as I don't watch hockey and I've never played it or read a book about it. But basically hockey or football it comes down to the players getting hot and sweaty. This was definitely a strong romance book.
Loved this NA college sports romance! The romance is really sweet, and I loved the sort of friends to lovers scenario. Jacob and Skylar have really great chemistry, and the sex scenes are wowza! This book also deals with some tough topics, and I think the author did a really great job of showing the various aspects of that topic, and showing the different sides to it. I don't want to spoil it, so I'll leave it at that. Jacob is a hockey player that has had some trouble in the past that has affected his place on his hockey team, so he needs to go to college and play for new hockey team, and he needs to be on his best behavior. Skyler had a rough year, and needs to get back into the swing of her college courses due to pressures from her family and from herself, so she doesn't want to let anything get in the way of getting A's in her classes, but when Jacob and Skyler meet, these 2 are finding it difficult to stay away from each other. Loved the whole story, and I really enjoyed both characters! Jacob is fun and a sweetheart, and he does have a bit of a bad boy past, but for his age, he's really quite mature. Skylar is also quite mature, and I liked reading about her growing as a person and dealing with her issues. I really wish there were more of an ending! I wanted an epilogue! The next book in series is about a different couple, but I hope we get more of Jacob and Skylar! I want to see how they are doing in the future! Looking forward to more from Kelly Jamieson!
This isn't your typical NA book, and I say that in a good way. The issues were dealt with in a thoughtful, and insightful way. I swooned so hard for Jacob, and Skylar was such a good heroine. Can't recommend this book enough!
I would like to thank NetGalley and Random House Loveswept for providing me with a copy of this book so that I can bring you this review.
Thought I read this book some time ago and forgot to place the review I want to say its not because I didn't enjoy the book. On the contrary I loved it. I loved how Kelly Jamieson was not afraid to deal with a topic so many kids in college are dealing with. False accusation are not something that we should take lightly, but at the same time we need to make sure that all those accusation are investigated in detail. I can't wait for the next book that will deal with more issues that we need to look at. I am loving these books.
I give this book 5 intense kisses...
Happy Reading... Adri
I loved this first Bayard Hockey novel. Skylar and Jacob were wonderful characters, and the storyline kept me interested throughout. I can't wait to read more!
