It pains me to do this since I love Lauren Morrill and her books, but that one just wasn't for me. I tried to get into it and I just wasn't able to. I'm not sure what my issue was but I am finally going to let it go and keep on loving all the other books by Morrill and all the books to come by her.
Meh at best. This was not for me. I am not a big contemporary romance reader at the best of times so that is part of it. I found Dee boring and immature. Milo started as a typical cookie cutter hollywood jerk. He does grow a bit on me. But sadly I could not get into this couple nor anyone else in the book. They story did nothing for me either. I like the small town feel, what little I got from this. The story is all too predictable and was not moving at all for me.
MY UNSCRIPTED LIFE is a sweet, sassy romance set in the steamy Georgia summer. Dee Wilkes is bitterly disappointed when she is not accepted to the art program at Governor's Honors Program. To make matters worse, her best friend does make it and is heading off to study science in Savannah. But Dee lucks into a summer gig with a film company that's come to town, and before she knows it, she's helping out on the set. One complication: The film's star, broody musical talent Milo Ritter who is suffering some personal setbacks of his own.
Of course the two end up together and of course there are complications along the way. But Dee's self deprecating humor makes this a fun read. It is predictable in the nicest way possible. Another bonus is the deft characterization of Dee's parents. Her dad is a history professor and her mom writes romances that are growing uncomfortably steamy along the way. ("Oh, gross!"). If there was anything lacking it would be references to Milo's own parents. It would have been very natural for the topic to come up, given his age, and it made me curious. On the other hand, Milo's ex-girlfriend looms large when she joins the cast playing his love interest in the film.
This is a book for romance fans, celebrity culture aficionados, and readers interested in some nitty gritty details of filmmaking. This, for me, was the big bonus. Morrill did her homework, which had to have been a lot of fun. Georgia does have a thriving film industry so that aspect was very true to life. I enjoyed getting a sense of what it would be like to be part of the crew. Kudos on a lovely little romance!
After having this book on my shelf for a long time I ended up losing interest on it so I won't be reading this one.
First, before I say anything else, let it be known that I read this book in under 24 hours and that is an amazing accomplishment in itself. Let it also be known that while I am only giving this book 2.5? 3? stars it's not because it's a bad book. I actually quite enjoyed this book overall, but I did have some problems.
Look, I'm pretty good as suspending reality when reading contemporaries that involve celeberties and other crazy instances - but this one was a little too much for me. It really came together a little *too* perfectly. And look, I would have ate this book up when I was 16 so I really can't hold that against it. It was just a little too cliched at times and a little too predictable for my tastes.
I think my biggest complain with this novel is that it didn't feel fleshed out enough. It read super fast, which I love, but because it read so fast it also came off as rushed? maybe. Everything in this novel happened really fast - like a little too fast. I wish the romance was a little more slow burn - but like I said before, this is all personal preference things. I under no circumstances hated this book.
One little gripe I will say is why oh why did Dee keep calling Milo her boyfriend when they barely knew eachother, it made me cringe so hard for no real reason.
HOWEVER -
I really enjoyed the characters in this novel and I wish I would've gotten more time for them to be fleshed out as well. I loved that our main character Dee had a passion for Art and that continued to be showcased throughout the entirety of this novel (though it was a big ironic that she got to show off her art skills so much). While Dee's parents weren't in the novel as much as I would have liked, I liked that they had unique jobs and were not completely absent as is the case with many YA novels. Milo was a likeable enough character, but once again, I wish I could've gotten to know him more.
I will also say that while I don't know how authentic it was (i'm assuming it was very thought out though) the descriptions of life on a movie set was really interesting to me and made the book very intriguing. I also adored the chapter openers that read like a movie script - I thought that was a very interesting and unique addition to the novel.
Overall, I would recommend this book. It's a super quick read and for the right person I think it could give you all the feels. I really enjoyed the writing style so I am defintely open to reading more from Lauren Morrill in the future.
This is a sweet YA story about a small town girl and a pop star-turned actor. Dee and Milo meet on the set of the new movie he's filming in her town. Dee has just been turned down for a summer art class and Milo is reeling from a big break up. When they become friends, they both begin to see life with fresh eyes.
Lots of laughs, great dialogue, and wonderfully flawed characters make this one of my favorite Lauren Morrill stories yet.
My Unscripted Life is an adorable contemporary romance—the perfect summer read. If you’re a fan of hate-to-love relationships (like I am) and celebrity romances, you’re in for a treat. My Unscripted Life is a quick read full of cute scenes, but I really did love how light and fluffy it was. It was on the dramatic side, but hey, this book does take place on a movie set (which in itself was fun) so of course a little drama is to be expected.
Summary: Reeling after her rejection from her first-choice art school, Dee impulsively takes a job on a movie set to pass the summer. Once there (and once past the initial bumps and bruises) she discovers a surprising aptitude for set dressing. She also discovers an attraction to the leading man, Milo - not so surprising, because he's a teen heartthrob with legions of adoring fans. But the biggest surprise? He actually seems to be attracted to her back.
First Impressions: Awwww cuuuuute! I liked how she refocused her love of art. But the ending was very rushed.
Later On: Lauren Morrill writes what I think of as Disney movies on paper. They're fun, they're cute, they're not terribly realistic, but it's a good time. As long as you pick this book with that in mind, you should enjoy it.
Super cute and adorable is the perfect way to describe this book. I picked this up before bed one night and read it all in one sitting because it was just that easy to read. I was really able to get into the story since it moved along so well. And I had to keep reading to find out what would happen next.
I still have enough teenage fangirl in myself that I can appreciate how awesome it would be to meet my crush. That was reason enough for me to fall in love with this story.
Dee and Milo meet each other when Dee starts working behind the scenes on the set where Milo is filming a movie. I found the movie making aspect of the story to be very interesting, and I loved the details that the author included. I also liked that Dee and Milo had valid reasons for spending time together and getting to know each other.
My only problem with this story? I didn't feel any deep connection between Dee and Milo. Sure, they were cute, and it was easy enough to root for them to be a couple, but that doesn't mean they had chemistry or actually made sense together.
My Unscripted Life was just what I needed to read - a fun and light contemporary YA romance with likable characters, an interesting plot, and the perfect Hollywood ending. I highly recommend this book if you're looking for something sweet and fluffy with a 'young' feel to it.
Guys, I’ve had this book on my Netgalley TBR for ages, but for some reason, I decided to finally start it a few days ago, and it was an easy and enjoyable read. If you have been following me for awhile, you know that a 3 stars rating is not that great for me, but I actually did enjoy this book, it’s just that I thought it had some major issues, especially in terms of plot and characters.
I really liked the writing, it was fun and light, and I loved that the story was told in the first person, and present tense. Dee’s voice was great, and it takes some pretty amazing writing to make nutty behaviour look endearing, and I think the author achieved just that.
Now, you might have noticed that I kind of said that Dee was a bit nutty, and while I loved her, I do think she was. I really liked that she had this artistic but slightly undefined side, because most times in books, teens have such a clear picture of what they want, that it was refreshing to see someone who was a bit clueless. But on the matters of the heart though, I’m not sure about her whole relationship with Milo, or how she kind of annulled herself in his presence.
I read the whole book, and while Milo seemed like a great dude at some points, I ended it and I don’t feel like I got to know him. Don’t get me wrong, there were some cute moments between Milo and Dee, but they were few and far between, and they had very little substance. They go on ONE date, and suddenly Dee is calling him her boyfriend, and everything just came after was a bit weird and needed a lot more context.
I felt like I was missing a huge chunk of the story you know? The part, after the first kiss, where they actually get to know each other and fall in love. Because this went from 0 to drama and to 1000 in one second, and I needed more. More context, more story, more plot and more character within our characters. I also felt like some points could have been explored a little more, like Dee’s relationship with her BFF, or her love for historic buildings, and how she and Milo had some things in common.
So, this ended up being a fun and fast read, but with major plot holes and lacking some serious context. I had fun, but with the amazing way it was written, this could have easily been a 4/5 stars book, but it was missing way too much.
Actual rating: 3.5 stars
I read this book at the right time, and that made all the difference in my enjoyment of the novel. This is the first book in ages that I finished in just a few hours, and I'm amazed that I still can do that, actually. This one is a short, light and not-so-fluffy read, but it provided the break that I so badly needed from the heavy and/or fantasy books that I have been reading in the past few weeks. Sometimes it's nice to just sit back and read a YA romance novel, even though it's full of predictable cliches.
My Unscripted Life is about a girl who was hired to be a PA for the art director in a film, and as with all cliches, she falls in love with the main actor who seemed closed off and rude at first. And to make things more fun, the lead actress is the actor's ex-girlfriend. Also, the actors are only there for a short while to film. As I said, it's all extremely cliche, but if you love cliches as much as I do, then I doubt you'll have any problems enjoying this one. Also, if you just need a simple story to relax, this is a perfect book for you. If you're looking for a book with the meaning of life, however, then steer clear of this one.
I know without a doubt that if I had read this book 2-3 years ago, this book would have made me swoon a thousand times, and I would have loved it. However, I grew a little bit older and my tastes have changed. But while I didn't love this one, I still enjoyed it nonetheless. It has a simple story that will take you away for a short while, and maybe make your heart race faster a couple of times. It's a relaxing short read, and it was the perfect book for me when I read it.
There's not much to say about this book, really. I just really enjoyed how quick it was to read, and how simple the story was that I didn't have to think, just let it take me away.
Summer is not going to plan for Dee Wilkies as she has been rejected for the fine arts precollege summer program she planned to go to. She is talking with her best friend Naz about what to do now at a local diner when in walks someone from a movie production. He asks for directions to Dee and Naz and tells them they are looking for help on set. The movie is starring the famous pop star Milo Ritter, on which Dee had a crush on since eight grade.
That summer, she is doing all kinds of stuff for the assistant of the assistent. She finds out that Milo is completely different then on TV: in real life he acts kind of rude to everybody, and because of his attitude she tries to stay away from him as much as possible. But then one day, she lands in a spontanious conversation with him, and again she has to change her opinion about him: he is actually quite nice, and his earlier rudeness has it reasons as he just broke up with his girfriend Lydia who cheated on him. During her work on the set, she gets to talk with Milo more and more, and it leads to a spark that flies over between them. They start to go out together, but later on the press picks it up, and picture of Dee kissing Milo appear online. Can a relationship with a guy like Milo ever work out for a girl like Dee?
The story of My Unscripted Life started a bit slow, but all of a sudden it increased in pace and the plot got better, and better and better!!
I have read one other book by Lauren Morrill earlier, Being Sloane Jacobs, which I LOVED, so I was excited to find an egalley of her newest book. This was honesty quite a shorter read then Being Sloane Jacobs, plot-wise also, but it was very cute, fun and entertaining. I never have read a book where the main character gets a romantic relationship with a famous movie star that actually works out in the end. (oops, sorry, spoiler alert!) Dee was just adorable and just a fun but also very realistic girl main protagonist. Milo was rude in the beginnin, but during the story his protective layers fell of and out from under that came just the perfect and very nice spirited guy for Dee. They truly fit together and it was just so entertaining to read. This book just puts a smile on your face!! Recommend it!
Stay tuned for my review of Meant To Be by Lauren Morrill which I just got a copy of and hope to review soon!
In Lauren Morrill’s My Unscripted Life Dee Wilkie finds herself sulking over her rejection from the precollege fine arts program until pop-sensation Milo Ritter arrives in her small town to film his movie. Dee gets hired and secretly hopes to run into/fall in love with Milo. When Dee does finally run into him she's rather unimpressed. Once Dee opens up and Milo’s guard comes down a chance for love seems possible. I enjoyed that despite an unrealistic situation the author made the story so relatable. I felt Dee responded realistically to seeing her celebrity crush. Dee is adorable, quirky, and a fun character. I wanted more Dee and Milo time in the novel. Overall, a very enjoyable fast read.
MY UNSCRIPTED LIFE by Lauren Morrill is a sweet and easy read. There’s not a ton of substance to this story (celebrity falls for small town girl), but it’s certainly an adorable, feel-good romance. The writing is sharp and the characters are likable. Perfect for a lazy Sunday afternoon or a plane ride.
