I really liked Michelle Krys' Witch Hunter series so I was really excited when I saw that she had another book coming out. I like that Hope isn't your typical perfect girl like in so many YA books. She has cystic fibrosis and a protective mother as a result. She gets an email inviting her to take part in a group that dares each girl in the group to do more and more crazy dares. It was a fast and engaging read for me. I enjoyed the characters. I wasn't super excited about the ending but I hope that means there will be a follow up.

I love a good "creepy" YA novel. This one does just that, making you a bit uncomfortable throughout the entire thing but showcasing truths about adolescence at the same time.

Grace has cystic fibrosis and has been sheltered by her mother due to how sick she is, but all Grace wants is a chance to life before she will die. When a strange email shows up inviting her to come to a place in the middle of nowhere to play a game, she knows she should ignore it. But Grace can't- she goes against her common sense and goes. And now she and four other girls are playing a game that may cost them their lives.

I am always up for an intriguing sounding mystery. Add in the fact that the main character has a debilitating disease and it was a guarantee that I would read this story (I love books with medical issues). I found the book to be a very fast read, I basically sat down one afternoon and read until I was finished that evening. The pacing, writing and plot were engaging enough to keep my interest, and where I had my possible suspect suspicions, I still enjoyed the twists and turns that the book provided.

We are introduced to Grace, the narrator, a girl who has been very sick, will never get better, yet she still longs for a chance to be a normal girl. She misses more days of school than she attends and has a terrible crush on her bestie who has no idea how Grace feels. Michelle did a great job of creating a very empathetic character, her longing, angst and awkwardness were practically palpable. I liked Grace and the fact she was pretty realistic about her life choices and very practical about what she could do. There were a few moments where I was wondering if she was not really sick, it was just her crazy mom- but alas, I was way off (too many conspiracy theories live in my brain).

I loved the ending- just when you think that everything is over and calm, that Grace has a chance to be happy and adventurous with however long she has left, BAM! a twist in the last paragraph in the book. I love mysteries like that, a surprise I did not anticipate with so much left unsaid. And, this is a standalone book, so that my friends is how you are left hanging (insert evil laugh here). I appreciate how Michelle ended the book and kept me on my toes throughout most of the story. I have read her Witch Hunter series and really enjoyed it so I was interested to see how she was with non-paranormal books (aka a teen mystery) and I am most certainly a fan. I look forward to whatever Michelle wants to write in the future.

The book is told through Hope, and she is an interesting character. Because of her cystic fibrosis she has led a very sheltered life. Her mom prefers it this way. She probably would never let her leave the house if she could. Because of this Hope feels like she has missed out on a lot of typical childhood and teenage adventures. So it isn’t a big surprise when she decides to embark on this wild dare game, even when things start to go wrong. The lure of winning lots of cash also helps keep her in the game. Cystic fibrosis is a debilitating disease that eventually kills. There is no cure, only medication and therapies that help to prolong the persons life. It is depicted well in this story, through the times when Hope struggles to breath and the therapies that she does with her mom. Hope takes her illness in stride and is very much aware of her limitations, but still she wants to do the dares. I liked Hope a lot, she is resilient and brave and clever. Even though she goes along with the dares, she still wants to find out who is behind them and why they were all chosen for this society.

The four other girls who are part of this little group are your typical teens and make for a diverse eclectic group. You have Hartley the badass and trouble maker, Lyla the basketball jock, Nicole the smart overachiever, Farrah the beautiful rich girl. Each girl has their own motivations for doing the dares. At first it doesn’t look like there is a commonality behind why they were all asked to be part of this society, but as the mystery behind it is played out we eventually find out the common thread that ties these five girls together.

The two love interests in the book were also complete opposites. Ethan is Hope’s best friend and has always been there for her. But he has a girlfriend now and doesn’t seem to be there for her as much. Hope admits to herself that she has a crush on Ethan, but it takes the game for her to get the courage to admit to it. I liked Ethan, he really wants to help Hope, but sometimes is clueless about her as well. Tucker is the typical popular rich boy, who has just a hint of bad boyness to make him interesting. You can tell he is up to something when out of the blue he decides to befriend Hope, but I also couldn’t help but hope that his motivations were not all bad.

Despite the fact that Hope’s mom was maybe a little over the top when it came to protecting her, I couldn’t fault her for it. It must be very hard to raise a child with such a debilitating disease. She did her best and by the end she started listening to Hope and what she wanted. Jenny, the younger sister, was very sweet and you could tell that she loved her sister a lot. Her role in the society was a bit much, but it made sense in the great scheme of things.

The dares are well done, but extremely dangerous. I was amazed that they all went through with them, I’m not sure I would have. The reasons and motivations behind this secret society are a little on the incredulous side. While I believe that revenge can be a great motivator, and make people do crazy things, I think this book takes it beyond what most people would believably do. The mystery behind the society is well played out. I pretty much had it figured out about the same time that Hope did. There were a few twists and turns though that kept me on my toes.

Overall this is a good read with lots of interesting twist and turns. It was nice to see a main character with a disability in a story of this type. The dares certainly did not lend themselves to something that a girl with her illness would ever due on her own. If you are looking for a solid secret society mystery adventure than take a risk and red this one.

Oh my goodness. It isn’t often that a book seriously has me turning the pages wondering what is going to happen next and who the heck is behind all of this mischief! But this one did.
Krys writes a very likeable MC in Hope. I was right behind her, wanting her to go to that warehouse on the first dare, because she doesn’t ever get to do anything normal. Sure, maybe something normal would’ve been a better idea than something deadly, but then we wouldn’t have a book and who cares, the stakes were there for sure. She wanted to be more than her Cystic Fibrosis and she wanted money for her very poor family.
Another thing I really liked was the mystery was very well-done and the tension was super high, but Krys still kept the graphic horror level low. She hints and minimally describes bad things happening, but it wasn’t gratuitous.
Truthfully, I really liked Ethan better than the developed love interest, but that’s not a critique of the writing at all, just my reader opinion.
Another thing Krys really shines at is writing teenage girls. Their personalities really jumped off the page. At first, I was a little lost when the four girls were introduced and I couldn’t tell who was speaking, and thought Hope actually disappeared in the dialogue for a long while, but it was only a small blip and I was sucked into these girls lives and not wanting any of them (mostly haha) to lose the “competition”.
The dares were extraordinary for teens to complete, but hey, where’s your suspension of disbelief? We read to experience things we would never do in real life. I loved this book because I felt like I was living a daring life and I seriously couldn’t put the book down or stop thinking of it when I was forced to take a break.
The mystery was well done, the tension and thrills were high, the ending was twisty ( even if it was also extremely cliffhangerly) and I recommend this to fans of a quick-paced read and especially fans of Pretty Little Liars.

An entertaining read.

This cover is completely the reason I requested this book and really with that title too... I was sold. It too me forever to read this one though, I think I just have too many ebooks chillin' in my Kindle and it is daunting. Anywho... I finally picked this one up and flew through it. I read it in maybe 2 sittings and it really had me hooked. I wanted to know who was behind the craziness and I wanted to know if anyone was actually going to die.

The story follows Hope who is very ill, she has been stuck at home for a while and would give anything to be able to be a normal teenager, then an email appears inviting her to play a game (very much like the creepy puppet in Saw). In this game, you perform a number of dares and knock off the other girls playing and eventually you win loads of money and for Hope that would really help with medical expenses... so she's in. Little does she know that there is something a lot more sinister going on with the game. Nor does she realize who is involved and how.

I think that this main character is why I loved this book, she was almost always dying but really it was because of how sick she was but she kept pushing all with the end goal of helping her family and the burden she has put on them. She is such a strong female role and I really enjoyed reading through her. Now that isn't to say that she was the smartest - the whole game was super creepy and it was VERY dumb of her to play and not tell anyone but teens will be teens I guess.

I think that ending of the book was a bit jumbled but came together ok - not the best ending I could have asked for but I really enjoyed the plot and all the suspense of it.

This was a book I read through in one sitting. It's brilliance as well as it's unpredictability kept me hooked throughout!

DEAD GIRLS SOCIETY is the first Michelle Krys book I’ve ever read and while it was intriguing, it wasn’t as epic as I expected it to be. But it was interesting and intense — not to mention that I didn’t even figure out who was behind it until it was revealed.

Hope, our main character, has cystic fibrosis and so her mother barely lets her out of the house because of germs and other calamities. I found Hope to be an interesting character because of how sometimes she stops to think if her sickness is actually holding her back from doing things or if it’s actually her fear of something new. It’s weird, but I really liked those parts.

The dares were probably my favorite part — they were exhilarating, though admittedly the end result of the first dare was kind of obvious to me. I love reading about dares (especially dares gone wrong), so when I read the synopsis for DEAD GIRLS SOCIETY, I got crazy excited. Not to mention that the cover is super duper gorgeous.

My main problem with the book was the dialogue between the characters. It felt fake and because of that, I didn’t really like any of the side characters. The romance was eh, the friendships were eh, every time they conversed it was eh.

Aside from that, I truly enjoyed DEAD GIRLS SOCIETY. There aren’t many books where I don’t easily find out who the bad guy is and it was refreshing to be stumped for once.

There really isn’t much else to say about DEAD GIRLS SOCIETY — it’s fairly short and I managed to finish it within a day. It’s made up of dares and the main character suspecting people, plus a girl who isn’t perfect, health-wise.

DEAD GIRLS SOCIETY is a book I would recommend for the thrilling dares and mystery, if you can get past the dialogue. Though I’d want the book for it’s pretty cover alone :P

'Dead Girls Society' is an exciting young adult mystery/thriller that will have readers guessing until the end. I'm a huge fan of the genre, so I jumped at the chance to read this book. I wasn't quite sure what to expect, but I had read previous books by the author and had really enjoyed them. I'm glad to say that this novel was a really enjoyable read that I managed to devour in a matter of hours. The plot might not have been completely original, but I liked the twists and turns the author added - along with the whole secret society angle. There were several possible suspects behind the "Society" and I loved trying to figure it out before Hope, the main character, did. That's always been one of my favorite parts about reading mysteries, and the fact that the plot kept me guessing was a big plus for me.

Hope was a good main character - realistic, down to earth, smart, a normal teenage girl - aside from her serious health problems. There were times when I felt like she dwelled an awful lot on her cystic fibrosis - to the point of overkill - but, then again, I don't suffer from the disease and I don't honestly know how it would affect me if I did. It didn't bother me enough to hinder my reading experience, but I did want to make a quick note of it anyways. The story is told from the first person point of view, which was a huge bonus. I loved getting to know Hope in the personal way that only that writing style can provide. For me, it's almost always the best way to go when telling a story, and this was no different. Honestly, if the author hadn't written it in this way, it might have been a bust for me. Luckily it was done in a fantastic manner and the writing really made a positive impact on my reading experience. I'd definitely recommend this novel for fans of the genre, as well as readers who enjoy suspense, thrillers, and even contemporary.

Dead Girls Society frustrated me because I really really wanted to like this. But I struggled with the main character. It wasn't even that she was unlikable (though, at times, she was) she just felt quite one dimensional.

However, if you're a fan of Pretty Little Liars you'll probably enjoy this book. It uses similar plot devices and the general atmosphere of the novel will be familiar to veteran PLL fans.

***SLIGHT SPOILER***

Another of my big problems with the protagonist was that I didn't really feel that she was as blameless as she made herself out to be. I'm not saying she deserved any of the treatment that she received, but she wasn't entirely the angel that she considered herself.

Cystic Fibrosis has been getting a lot of attention in recent years. I'd never heard about it until Bates Motel or Foreverland, one of the two. I like being aware of diseases like this because if books, movies, shows, and people bring it out to the forefront more people will care. Hope has this illness that basically gives her a shorter life span. Her mother is super protective of her so basically she's been shut in her home since the last time she's gotten real sick. Then, suddenly, comes this e-mail that dares her to come to this spot. She's going to be playing a game. What she doesn't know yet is the lengths to which the Society will go to make sure she and other girls, all different, stay playing the game. No cheating, no leaving, until the game is finished or the Society will make sure you are punished.

From this cover and from the way the characters were written this felt very much like a middle grade book to me but it's geared toward YA. I felt like I was going to feel it was MG before I read the story so that didn't throw me off too much. The mystery is what ended up throwing me off. I hadn't anticipated how much I would need to know who was behind everything and why. The growing suspense had me flying through Dead Girls Society. Thankfully, the reveal and reasoning was satisfying.

It took me a while to get to know everyone's names but they became memorable when things started hitting the fan. All of the girls, save Hope, had been blackmailed to play the game. It seems like the Society has been keeping tabs on these girls. Hope really was the only one who wanted to figure out who the person/people were behind everything because nothing felt right. I like how the girl everyone think is weak, including herself, ends up being the most daring of them all.

Hope likes a boy. A boy who just happens to be her best friend. I didn't really care for this part of the story so I mainly ignored it. I did like the other love interest more. As a whole though, the mystery blew this part of the story away.

The mystery and suspense kept me guessing in Dead Girls Society. I think that the story could have been written more like it was a YA book to bump everything higher in my opinion. I enjoyed how everything was resolved and Hope's deducing skills. That cliffhanger at the end was killer!
