A great book to help children understand the precarious nature of children living in poverty with the personal and health risks. Illustrations are excellent and very appropriate. Shows the resourcefulness of the children in particular Pedro.
This lovely book brings into sharp focus the extreme poverty and conditions that some children deal with every day of their lives. Pablo and his sister visit the dump every day to search among the foul smelling stacks of refuse for small bits of metal their mother can sell to be recycled. Not only do they have to contend with the dirt and refuge, they also encounter those who steal what they have salvaged. One day, Pablo finds a true treasure that can be sold to provide ample food for his family. But, will he get to keep it when he encounters a thief?
