This book was just ok for me. I did not engage with the characters very well and the plot seemed to be flat in places. The book did not keep my attention.
Many thanks to Amazon Crossing and to NetGalley for providing me with a galley in exchange for my honest opinion.
2.5 stars for A Darker Sky by Mari Jungstedt and Ruben Eliasson.
I have to admit that I have never been overly impressed by co-authored books. A Darker Sky has done nothing to alter my opinion.
It started reasonably well, but I found the time lines a little confusing. There is now, which has dates but no year, and 'earlier '. But there is no indication of when earlier is.
There are some interesting portions in the book, but they are few and far between. Some of the writing is rather melodramatic, but I am unsure if this is the way it was written or a product of the translation from Swedish.
Mostly the characters are quite odd and unfathomable.
This is a book that didn't fully hold my interest. I found my mind wandering as I read and several times I debated abandoning the read. In several instances side issues overwhelmed the plot. I am unsure if these were intended to be red herrings.
Thank you to Amazon Crossing via Netgalley for providing a digital copy of A Darker Sky by Mari Jungstedt and Ruben Eliasson for review. All opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own.
Multiple murders, multiple suspects, and multiple narrators made for quite a confusing novel. I love suspense and thrillers, so the initial murder was interesting, and the story immediately went into the police characters, islanders, and the woman reporter who would be following the clues. I must admit that the island, beach, yoga center, markets, and homes were a great backdrop for my imagination.
But when the book would say, "Earlier", it was a bit confusing as to what time period in the actual story. Little by little, I was able to piece together some of the imagery. And because the story line jumped around the characters so much, I had to write down who was married to who, who was in a relationship with who, and who were family members. It was a long drawn-out story, but I did like the ending, and as a reader, the "lightbulb moment" happened pretty much at the time I feel the authors wanted me to figure it out.
I wouldn't say no to the next book by this collaboration. I feel they left the ending with a bit of a question, so that the reader would be intrigued enough to follow the next case, and after so much character building in this novel, maybe the next one will be a bit of a less bumpy ride.
Thank you to NetGalley and Amazon Crossing for the opportunity to review this book for free, for my honest opinion.
