As a teacher, I always encourage students to read the original documents where possible. Instead of just reading ABOUT history, read the thing itself. The actual words at the time are impactful and a more genuine experience than reading someone's interpretation many times removed. Although overviews are of course necessary, the documents in this book help round out students' knowledge about the Civil War.
