In Nightshades, we follow McKenna and Lindi as they try to solve the mystery of the missing children.

I’m usually really picky with paranormal books. I’ve read enough of them and don’t usually bother picking new ones just because I know I won’t care about them. But Nightshades was different. I don’t know if it was the characters or the writing but I really enjoyed the book. The mystery was interesting and I was genuinely invested in it. In terms of characters, McKenna was your typical detective/police officer but Lindi was more nuanced and gave dimension to the story.

Nightshades is the first book in the Nightshades trilogy, which I really want to continue. The books are short (~200 pages) so I’m hoping I’ll get through them quickly.

This was a nice new start of an urban fantasy series. And yes, it did involve vampires, or shades as they are called, and of course, we have seen more than a fair share of them already in recent years, but still... It didn't bother me too much.

There was a lot ongoing in this book and a lot of characters that were being introduced and then, a huge cliffhanger...

Still planning to read the next one, though.

I really liked Olson's Disrupted Magic series, so I was enthusiastic to start Nightshades. Despite having stereotypical vampire baddies, Nightshades reads more like a regular thriller than an urban fantasy probably because there isn't much world building or character interaction. It's all about hunting the bad guys and that was too easy. The story wasn't developed enough with everything happening quickly including the ending.

It kept my interest enough for me to request the second book, Switchback, from my local library. I would not have bothered buying a copy based on Nightshades.

This vampire story really "works" because of the believability of its characters and details. For instance, thinking about a possible need for a tetanus shot after bleeding from a cut. Both the vampires and the agents are complex and believable characters. I look forward to reading more books in this series!

Half police-procedural, half-urban fantasy, this book is a delightful take on vampires, or "shades". More macabre than sexy, the vampires in this novel are sure to delight fans who are tired of the same-old, same-old when it comes to vampires. Given the cliffhanger at the ending, this novel is most likely the first in the series. My major complaint: too short. Make the next one longer, please, please, please!

Definitely a must-read for fans of vampires and urban fantasy!

Really, really interesting, but not entirely memorable or particularly exciting.
