These kinds of books are always a bit of a risk. If the book's editors/authors enjoy the same TV shows as you do, then they can be excellent reads that clearly show that you, too, have excellent taste in entertainment media. This is a pretty sweeping book, packed with interesting observations and descriptions of various shows. A must-read for anyone who spends more time than they perhaps should thinking about and consuming TV...
An enjoyable non-fiction book in which two tv critics debate and come up with a ranking system for the best tv shows of all time, and then write essays on the various shows, as well as shorter pieces about some of the contenders. This is not the kind of book that you sit down and read cover to cover, but was perfect as a book I read on my phone whenever I had a little time to spare. I skimmed or sometimes skipped entries if I had never watched the shows, but for the shows that I had watched either regularly or sporadically, find the pieces very interesting - and the relative rankings were interesting as well. I have been a long time reader of Alan Sepinwall's blog "What's Alan Watching" on various websites, he is definitely my favorite tv writer out there.
This is a wonderful and thoughtful resource for learning history and culture. The text is fun to read, and at the same time, it is excellent for teaching readers how to argue and debate authors of a book while reading. The book is a great basis for teaching review writing as well as claims based writing supported by evidence. I love this terrific and thorough resource!
