Her Highland Rouge by Violetta Rand is wild ride through growing up, understanding family ties, and long time rivalries. With strong and stubborn characters, there are lots of misunderstandings. Yet, the characters are well written, likable, and show growth throughout. An overall enjoyable read.

I really enjoyed Errol and Aileana's story! Errol is sent to bring Aileana after she ran into the mountains to evade the unwanted attentions of another. He soon realizes that he has feeling for her. It was a quick, enjoyable read!

I had mixed feelings about Her Highland Rogue. This was a quick read and I enjoyed some parts of this book. BUT, I really had to push myself to continue reading in order to know what happens to the main character, Aileana. I rarely give low star ratings, but, let me explain why I had to for this book.

Plot: The plot definitely has the potential for a magnificent storyline, however, I felt that it wasn't delivered as well as it could've been. It felt rushed and was not interesting enough to keep a reader in its grasp. Aileana and Errol's "love" connection was weak and didn't 'feel' like they were truly in love. The villain of the story, his motives were weak and senseless. Honestly, the only reason I kept reading was that I wanted to know who Aileana's parents were. That's it. And I knew who the mother would likely be from the beginning, it was no surprise to me. Aileana's father, however, was a little surprising.

Characters: As the main characters, Aileana and Errol should've had a depth to them. Something to make the reader feel something for them, relate to them even a little. I honestly felt nothing for either of them. Aileana, I felt, did not have a strong voice at all. I wanted to reach through the pages and hand her a backbone. And Errol...his character was a bit frustrating at some points. I wanted to care about them at least a little. Sadly, I didn't. Their romance was not steamy, I didn't want to swoon with heartfelt joy at their relationship, it was tepid and I couldn't get into it.

Dialogue: Was simple. Nothing that stood out or made me want to reread it. The way the characters stated their love for one another, didn't make me want to grasp my heart and sigh with joy. It was a shake of my head.

I absolutely love reading Historical Highland Romances, it's my favorite sub-genre in romance, and I've read plenty. Like I said before, I don't enjoy giving low star reviews, at all...But, I just had to be honest with myself, the author and the readers.

The reason I gave it 2.5/3 stars, instead of 1or 2, is because I did finish the book and I was a little surprised who the father was and what happened to make Aileana an orphan. Also, the plot potential was there, it just needs a bit of guidance. Aileana's backstory has potential.

Overall, it was an ok story. I can't say that I would recommend to romance readers because I feel the author needs to work on the delivery of showing, not telling a story.

I liked how it was a highland version of West Side Story. Two clans against each other, but one woman and her unknown heritage is what brought them together.
