I received this book from the publisher through Netgalley for review and all thoughts and opinions are my own.
This book is a great blessing for those with a prodigal son or daughter. Prayer is indeed a mighty weapon against that which would take them far from us. It encouraged my heart and will do yours as well. Work through it slowly and repeat as needed.
This book includes pre-written prayers for parents with kids who "aren't living right" to pray. The inclusion of scriptures in every prayer is a bonus, as those who don't particularly enjoy "scripted prayers" can find value in the book as well. It also provides biblical context and strength verses to rely on as one continues to pray. While I wouldn't say this is a go to book for helping parents learn how to pray for their prodigal children, it works. I'd recommend this to people who I know enjoy scripted prayer, but not in general.
What a balm for the soul! This book is a wonderful resource for parents who struggle with a prodigal. I have been awake countless hours in the night praying for mine, and I know my heart and mind tend to focus on worry and the what-ifs in her life. This book helped me to focus on scripture, hope, and trusting in the Lord. The stories shared in between the prayers were also encouraging. What a great encouragement for the hearts and minds of those who are struggling through prayer for their wayward child.
What a wonderful book of prayer. Prayer is so important to every Christian's life and I love that while this book is the Prayer for Prodigal we all drift at times and need the reminder prayers to bring us back. I thought I would read a prayer a day but enjoyed them so much I read them in a few short days. As a parent of 5 kids, these prayers are so helpful and great reminders how great God is. Our kids, family and friends need prayers daily. This book is full of great prayers and so many scriptures. I think I will read it often.
Thank you NetGalley for the opportunity to read this great book and give an honest review.
The mom of a prodigal I found this book very helpful. It reminded me to keep praying for her to return, not so much to me, but to her Heavenly Father. Thank you James Banks for writing this timely book.
It's inevitable....when we pray for something close to our heart every day, day in and out, our prayers will become repetitive and sometimes we even run out of things to say.
That's why I am giving this book 5 full stars. We do regularly need help with our prayers and what better than the Word of God to give us those words, those phrases and even those promises.
Prayers for Prodigals is actually a 90-day devotional with prayers that borrow from the rich texts of Scripture. Almost every sentence gives the Biblical reference.
Thank you Netgalley and Our Daily Bread Publishing for the chance to read this title. This is my honest review.
Prayers for Prodigals by James Banks is a 90-day prayer guide for parents to pray for their child. A prodigal is a child who has turned his back on his parents, taken from The Story of the Prodigal Son in Luke 115:11-32. Prodigals can teach parents the need for patience, forgiveness, and continual dependence on God in prayer. Mr. Banks has personal experience with dealing a prodigal child as both his children had a prodigal period in their lives. He designed each week with a theme, for instance one week is entitled “God’s Timing.” Each week opens with a brief meditation and a personal story how Mr. Banks and his wife experienced the prayers for that coming week. Within each week is a day of a Scripture based prayer for your child. Covering the emotional and practical challenges faced by parents of prodigals, James Banks offers a guide for parents to learn to lean on God and allow His movements in their child’s life.
Prayers for Prodigals is a great tool for parents who are dealing with children who may be wandering and rejecting their parents’ help, advice, and guidance. One of my favorite weeks is Week 9 entitled “Waiting for an Answer” in which Mr. Banks reminds Christian parents that God always answers prayers with a yes, no or wait. Wait answers are often confused with no answers and parents must wait on God when we pray. He may answer yes but we may not see the result right away or even in our lifetimes. He provides examples of parents’ prayers being answers years after the parents’ have passed. I also liked that in the book as well as at the end, Mr. Banks wishes to hear from parents who have been affected by his book. Overall, Prayers for Prodigals is a great tool for parents of prodigals and even parents in general to pray for their children as they grow up to be more independent and go out in the world on their own. I highly recommend Prayers for Prodigals.

This is a must have resource for any parent with a child who is struggling with addiction or mental illness. The book is filled with experience, strength and hope from a dad who has been there. The prayers are meaningful, thoughtful, and moving. The book is well written and well organized. I cannot recommend this book enough. Every church, treatment center and therapists office should have a copy in their library.
An early copy of this book was made available to me by the publisher through netgalley. This is my honest review.
This book is written for parents who have a child who is not living in the way the parents had hoped.
Each of the 13 weeks begins with a devotional to encourage the parent. Then follows 7 days of prayer for the child. Each of these prayers reminds me of Beth Moore's Praying God's Word books.
This book is soothing; a balm for a weary soul. Using scripture generously all situations concerning a prodigal child are reinforced by scripture. The author lays bare his heart because he's been there. I appreciated his honesty and the model of praying the scripture. I also love that the prayers are open-ended allowing you to add more. It's not just for parents of the prodigal in the classical sense; it's for anyone who prays for a lost soul.
This book is a treasure. I love the scripture used throughout. I instantly related to the author when he said he had two prodigals as I do as well. This book is one that you can pick up any time you need inspiration to pray for the prodigals in your life. Thanks to Our Daily Bread and to NetGalley for this ARC.
I truly enjoyed reading this devotional. I think this is a heartfelt and moving devotional. Its wonderful written.
I read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are of my own. Thank you NetGalley and Our Daily Bread Publishing for letting me read this book.
Parents who pray for prodigals go through seasons. Sometimes the prayers come from their guts, and are heartbreakingly real. Other times they rise from Scripture given for just such a season. Then at other times they feel so repetitious, like they have been praying these same prayers for so long, and just don't know what else to say. This book will be such a wonderful resource for just such times. Parents will be given a fresh way of speaking to God not only for their child(ren), but for themselves as well. The book is divided into thirteen weeks, each beginning with a devotion which is followed by seven prayers. The subjects are real and relevant. The book is heavily Scripture based. There is much hope to be found in the pages of this book.
I am grateful to have received a copy of Prayers for Prodigals from Discovery House an affiliate of RBC Ministries via NetGalley in exchange for my honest opinion. I was under no obligation to provide a positive review, and received no monetary compensation.
This is such an important book in today's culture. Every day I see parents struggling with their relationship with a child, with a child's life choices and consequences, parents struggling with how to help and where to start. This book brings the focus to scripture. Each day has a scripturally based prayer for a prodigal. The paper copy has room for journaling additional thoughts. I think it has relevance for anyone with a family member who is struggling, to learn how to effectively pray for them. It also serves to let us know we're not alone - we aren't the only ones facing seemingly impossible circumstances.
A very well thought-out devotional. I found the scriptures relevant to the daily prayers and applicable to every day life.
This is an excellent and needed book. I appreciate that the prayers are biblical and relevent.
I receive a complimentary copy of this book for the purpose of an honest review.
As the mother of a prodigal this book was so helpful! It consists of 90 prayers for your prodigal children and it is full of praying scripture. I know that the Word of God is active and alive! Praying scripture is so helpful and encouraging. This book should be a go-to resource for any parent of a prodigal child.
I like the way this book sprinkles the scriptures throughout the prayers. You could take this book with you on vacation to read and not need to bring your bible to look up the reference verse on bible gateway. The scriptures are written out through the prayers and referenced if you want to read more.
This was a great prayer devotional for every parent. You do not need to have a true prodigal child to benefit from this prayer book.
I received this galley from NetGalley.
Prayers for Prodigals by James Banks is a 90 day prayer guide rooted deeply in bible verses that can be used to pray for anyone who may be separated from loved ones . This novel goes very well with and additional novel entitled Hope Lies Ahead by this author and his son. When you are not sure how or what to pray for or about this novel will lovingly guide you. I have never seen a prayer guide like this. I’m sure this would be helpful to anyone who is discouraged but wants to pray for a son or daughter who needs the support of parents and God. I would highly recommend this prayer guide. I received this novel from the publisher and netgalley in exchange for a fair and honest review.
