This is a fascinating account of the intellectual or ideological underpinning behind the oppressive regime of Putin’s Russia. Charles Clover delineates the growth of the arcane concept of Eurasianism from the early twentieth century which posits that Russia should develop an anti-Western alliance of itself and immediate neighbours in the Eurasian landmass. Based upon xenophobic nationalism it sees Russia as having a unique role to play in global politics . Initially perceived as being esoteric, if not downright unhinged, Clover makes a good case to demonstrate how it is now accepted in the higher echelons of Russian decision-making. The assertiveness of Russia, its commitment to constant lying and deception are examined in detail by Clover. It is highly desired reading for anyone who is concerned by the rise of Russian aggression in Europe and the world.
