It’s fun to see Nicola Scott fuck around with black and white art with the occasional dash of color for emphasis, and Rucka is good at doing a cop who is also another thing (witch) story.

An excellent start to an intriguing premise!

Rowan Black is a witch and a detective, and she needs to keep the two parts of her life separate. No matter how much she tries, the two halves of her life are being brought together, and the results could be deadly.

There is a great setup to the story in this volume, with introductions to the main characters and a mystery identified. The blend of policework and the supernatural is seamless, and the artwork has a lived-in, noir feel. This story will be enjoyed by anyone who is into urban fantasy stories.

Really enjoyed this. I've never anything by Greg Rucka before but I liked the pacing and style so id happily dip into more of his work again.

An excellent and mature entry into a genre often populated with slapstick and fan-service. Very glad it will be an ongoing series.

Rowan Black is a police detective that also happens to be a witch, she is interrupted in one of the rituals of her coven by a phone call because a man is holding hostages in a restaurant and has asked to see her, She doesn`t know that man and when he faces him the encounter ends whith the kidnapper in flames. This event lead to a IAB investigation on Rowan, while the agent Black tries to reveal who sent the kidnapper to seek for her.

This is a great comic, the story is very interesting and the art is beutiful, realistic but also expressive.

That was fantastic! The story sucked me in from the very first page and didn't let go. The magic is fascinating, the characters are tough and intriguing, and story kept me turning the pages as quickly as I could because I had to know what happened next.

I also loved that the artwork is mostly in black and white with only dashes of color here and there, reserved only for the magic on the page. The art is moody and dark and dramatic -- perfect for the story.

I can't wait to read more!

'Black Magick, Volume 1: Awakening, Part One' by Greg Rucka with art by Nicola Scott is a new series starring a cop with supernatural powers. She's leading a double life, because the cops don't seem to be aware of what she can do.

A hostage situation turns weird when Rowan Black, a cop with supernatural powers, is called out by the perpetrator. He knows her full name, which she is horrified to learn he knows her given name and her real name. Things get stranger when a known criminal is found drowned. When he is pulled out, he is missing a hand. Rowan suspects someone wants to make a hand of glory. Using both her cop knowledge and her witchcraft knowledge, she is on the trail of tracking down who it is.

Then the book ends. On a cliffhanger.

The art is two tone with some small amounts of color added in for dramatic effect, and it's good art. I like the shading and depth and the sparse use of color. The story is good for an urban fantasy. I hope we learn more about why Rowan needs to hide her supernatural abilities from the other cops. She's a good character with some good supporting characters. I liked it. Just not the abrupt ending.
