I really enjoyed this book. It's very thought provoking and deep and also suspenseful. I like that it is a time traveling book. That's different and pretty cool. I'm interested in reading more from this author.
This was an interesting premise, but I couldn't get to the interesting part before I was annoyed with everyone in the story.
Dark, angsty, with poignant sharp writing, A DARKLY BEATING HEART is a book that won't appeal to everyone but that's simply because it's clearly been written for a specific type of girl in mind. Reiko is one of the angriest female protagonists i've ever seen in YA and I adore her for it—and want more angry, vengeful girls in my books. The plot was quick and deftly plotted, and though sometimes the minor characters felt loosely sketched, Reiko made up the difference by being a gripping, painful character to read about.
Reiko is an angry girl. Raised in America, she finds herself in Japan after an incident with her ex-girlfriend goes very very wrong. Under the care of her uncle, artist Reiko is given a job working with her wannabe J-Pop star cousin. While visiting a small town during a cultural festival, Reiko finds herself slipping back in time into the life of Miyu, a nineteenth century girl. Both girls are longing to seek revenge, and as their timelines come closer together, Reiko is consumed with hatred and will have to overcome it to face her own demons.
