Hidey-ho fellow SMPer! I'm just leaving a review that I don't want you to publish because I checked this book out via Netgalley and am trying to raise my score. I wish we could send ebooks from the MDL to our Kindle! Please don't post this publically haha!
I'm going to write this review as a "series" review because, quite frankly, I binge read the whole series THIRTEEN books in one week. I literally couldn't put them down. When I read the last page of the last book, I wanted to cry.
Book one hooks you from the start. The world that Darynda built within this series is phenomenally creative. It's full of magic and mystery. The hero is the perfect anti-hero turned true hero that I've read in a long, long time. My heart broke for the trials and tribulations the hero and heroine went through to get to the end of the series. Calling it an emotional rollercoaster doesn't even cover the vast span of emotions that the author drags the reader through.
The only complaint I have is that the series ended.... there was a "the end" and I didn't want to be done yet. A complete must read for all PNR lovers!
I love the Charley Davidson series, always a great read. Very funny but also pulls on the heart strings. The next book can’t come fast enough.
Thank you to NetGalley, who provided me a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Finally! This book brought my appreciation for the series back to the forefront! MANY more answers were given. More plot development was achieved...and even though I spent a little time with my Puffs Plus box...and some comfort Godiva was consumed. I consider it a win that my feels were engaged so heavily. Charley and Reyes had some serious disconnect going on...do they fix it? You need to read it yourself to see. No spoilers here, no sirree...not me!
As always, Ms. Jones has a style all her own. Her wit and stylized humor reflects on the page and it's like reuniting with friends when you open a Charley Davidson novel. I connected much better with this 10th installment than I have the last few in the series. Yay! 4 stars.
Really fun series! Enjoy the humor! Definitely start the series from the beginning before reading this one; a lot has happened. Love Charley and Reyes. Love all the demon talk and different dimensions talk. Didn’t love all the secrets and I still don’t love the Beep storyline. I wasn’t as invested in Charley’s side cases this time around, but they did pick up towards the end. And I really could’ve done without Charley getting felt up or feeling up random guys; especially the Umberto stuff. Not cool Charley. Not cool. It’s nothing major, but still annoying. Overall, fun, exciting series!
A re-read thanks to a promotion by Netgalley for the final Charley Davidson book. I love this series and so happy to have it in my e-reader instead of getting a loan from the library.
EBook/Urban Fantasy: This is book 10 of the Charley Davidson series and I would like to thank Netgalley for letting me have the whole series in lieu of an honest review. This book has been out for a while so there will be hinted spoilers in the review.
First, at this point, you can tell the author has an endgame to the series in sight. Each book ending foreshadows a big showdown to happen in future books. This book also hints of a plot point in book 11.
I like Charley's posse more than her. While I do like her sense of humor, my BFF is right: Charley is getting dumber in each book. As usual, there are three plots going on to keep me interested.
What I didn't like was Charley has become rich via Reyes. Reyes stole and invested money via the internet while he was in prison? Seriously? Reyes is supposed to be a good guy, but he has obtained $50 billion which is the wealth of any evil bad guy in the 007 books or movies. Yet he's still a line cook at the diner? Should he be trying to build a demon anti-matter gun to evaporate anyone who tries to kill his daughter?
Well now we have two new characters in this book who will become regulars. I don't like that Rocket was barely used (he usually has the answers) and Jessica was MIA. Did Reyes really destroy her in NY? I liked that Jessica didn't agree and/or suck up to Charley like everyone else.
As far as the book went, I guessed her PI case too easily. The reaper/god/Reyes/end of the world plot is becoming too complex in a bad way. While I like paranormal politics, Charley is becoming Anita Blake without the lovers. First she's the grim reaper; now she's a god.
This is the tenth book in the series, and I have to say that I absolutely love every single one. Charley is witty and sassy, but she always finds the truth. The characters are strong and lively, and the story line is solid and kept me enraptured. Thank you NetGalley and Ms. Jones. I look forward to reading more of Charley's travails.
I wasn't sure what to expect, but I enjoyed reading this. An interesting story with fun characters. Well written.
Curse of the Tenth Grave is the next book in the Charley Davidson series by Darynda Jones. At this point in the series you really need to have read all the other books to understand some of the more complicated plot movements.
As a part-time PI and full-time grim reaper, Charley Davidson has asked a lot of questions throughout her life: Why can I see dead people? Who is the hot supernatural entity following me? How do I get gum out of my sister’s hair before she wakes up? But, “How do I trap not one malevolent god, but three?” was never among them. Until now. And since those gods are on earth to kill her daughter, she has little choice but to track them down, trap them, and cast them from this dimension. There’s just one problem. One of the three stole her heart a very long time ago. Can the Razer, a god of absolute death and destruction, change his omniscient spots, or will his allegiances lie with his brothers? Those are just a few of the questions Charley must answer, and quick. Add to that a homeless girl running for her life, an innocent man who’s been charged with murder, and a pendant made from god glass that has the entire supernatural world in an uproar, and Charley has her hands full. If she can manage to take care of the whole world-destroying-gods thing, we’re saved.
Curse of the Tenth Grave is another foray into the more serious side of Charley and her life. Everyone is on edge, and keeping secrets in order to protect each other. And that never ends well. The twists and turns of the supernatural origins of our cast of characters becomes more twisted and complicated, and they need to deal with issues in trust, loss, and fear. Charley is still a little scattered, and has some cute asides. However, there are moments where her quirks start getting frustrating and make her feel more childish than amusing. The cast of characters is still extremely well done, and I love some of the twists and turns the story takes. I am still enjoying my binge read, working my way to the thirteenth and final book in the series. However, I am having more sympathy for the characters Charley has hassled earlier in the series than I am for her in some ways, and during some exchanges.
I'm so happy that this series is completely back on track now that Charley has her memory back. We're back to seeing her work her magic as she simultaneously tries to prove a man is innocent of murder, help a young runaway who believes she has been cursed, deal with a blackmailer, oh and try to figure out a way to stop the gods of Usen and thwart the apocalypse. All of that would be much easier if she wasn't trying to keep secrets from Reyes but he's been keeping her at arm's length ever since they got back from New York and she's got no idea how to bridge the gap between them (thank goodness for Cookie on that one because she comes up with a very creative way to get them talking again!).
There have been some really interesting revelations about both Charley and Reyes in the last couple of books, ones that are going to have a huge impact on the rest of the series so I'm dying to see how everything all comes together now we're in the final stretch. I did find myself frustrated that Charley still doesn't completely trust Reyes, he has been through so much trying to keep her safe and it just takes one small thing, that potentially happened years before they became a couple, for her to doubt his love for her. I could understand why she was keeping certain secrets but I was so relieved when everything was out in the open and that they're now fully back on track relationship wise.
It's also great to see Charley starting to push herself and figure out what her abilities actually are, she's learning all the time and is capable of far more than she ever expected. There was one moment that left me utterly heartbroken for Reyes in this book, he's lost so much already and it really isn't fair for even more to be taken from him. I was far more upset about that than I was about Charley's loss in the previous book but I am extremely worried about a certain revelation about Ubie and hope Charley is able to figure out a way to stop what is coming. Anyway, I'm glad I can dive straight into the next book so I won't have to wait to find out what happens next. I have a feeling I'm going to be binging the last three books very quickly!
Great series. Could not put the book down I love these characters. any character named cookie gets my vote.
Book ten of this fantastic series done and dusted. I have never read a series that has stayed so consistently strong. Wonderful characters that have almost become like friends.
Charley is hiding Reyes’ true self, Reyes is backing off of Charley. So many things being kept secret, trust isn’t all there. Charley learns a big secret about her Uncle. I’m sad I am almost done with this series. As always, I love it. Thank you to NetGalley for allowing me to review this.
This series is always in high demand at my library. The characters Daryna Jones uses are delightful and my readers love getting to know them more each book. Fabulous series!
The Curse of Tenth Grave was an improvement on the previous Charley Davidson book, starting with Charley actually knows who she is. But she knows something about Reyes that's straining their relationship, which you know, takes part of the fun out of a Charley Davidson book. Thankfully, some of the early books are reflected in this story, with Charley running several investigations that don't apparently have anything to do with the underlying god from another universe storyline. The full gamut of characters is back, although once again Jones doesn't hesitate to put a character in a perilous situation. This book has some of the pieces that made earlier books more fun to read, but the same level of humor still isn't back in the series.
THe Curse of the Tenth Grave was much better than the last two in the series. It makes sense why Charlie had amnesia and some questions are answered. Reyes and Charlie have both been keeping more secrets and everything comes full circle. This book has all the suspense, heat, and loss that the others have in the series. I am voluntarily leaving my honest review after reading this arc.
So far this series has been so darn good and this one is no different.
I couldn't put this one down and read it very quickly. I just love Charlie.
I can't wait to continue on the series.
The Charley Davidson series is one of my absolute favorites. The Curse of Tenth Grave is the, you guessed it, 10th book in the series, and a fine stepping stone to what will hopefully be a fantastic 11th book. The writing is as hilarious and steamy as ever, because no matter where the story takes us, we can always count on Darynda Jones's snappy sentences.
If you're reading this review, then you're probably already reading the series, or you stumbled across it somehow and are wondering if it's worth starting in the first place. Let me tell you that I don't continue pushing through a series if I have found it lacking. I see no reason to waste valuable reading time, so if I've made it to book 10, then you can trust that I recommend it!
That said, after the crazy strides that books 8 and 9 made, it makes sense that this one is a little slower and less volatile. It feels a little more like the first couple books, getting us back into the swing of things after the crazy changes that Charley has endured in the past couple books. So while it wasn't explosive, story wise, it was entirely satisfying. Everyone is figuring out how to live together again, and of course, there are secrets being kept and revealed.
The ending does leave us with some cliffhangers, or more like future story threads that are ongoing, and a little bit of a shock. Things are getting complicated and I'm so excited for the surprises that are in store for us readers.
Review:
Since I read all of the Charley Davidson in one long run, yes, I had not read any of the series yet, I decided to write one review for the previously released books and one for the last book in the series.
First let me say, these are wickedly awesome books! Loved the story line, the writing and the characters. For me it was great to read them all at once and a little sad, since there will not be anymore. One of the things I loved about the books was Charley and her balls to the wall, help whoever, whenever she can attitude. Now that sure got her in lots of trouble, but it was so much fun to read. I loved the snarky witty dialogue and the quotes at the beginning of each chapter cracked me up. Now, it is not all fun and games in this story, there were points when I was crying and points I was on the edge of my seat with the action going on. I have to say on the whole this is one of the best and most well-rounded series I have read where I was not once bored or wanting to put down a book.
I am not sure what this Author has coming next, but she has me on the hook for whatever it is.
5 Big Stars for all of the books in the series
*I voluntarily read reader copies of each book provided by the publisher for review.*
