While Ron Chernow's Grant biography might get all the attention, I thought Ronald White's American Ulysses brought a great understanding to Ulysses S. Grant. Having already done spectacular work about Abraham Lincoln, White shifts his focus to the leader of the Union army and the results are again full of interesting facts that will give you a much better understanding of Grant.
For too long Grant's presidency has been dismissed as scandal plagued. I'm glad to see the renewed interest in him to provide a deeper understanding of this legendary American leader.
The finest type of biography is one that allows the reader to truly get to know the subject, and Ronald C. White's masterful depiction of the life of Ulysses S. Grant is just such a book. He thoroughly explains the background, motivation and the career of this seminal character in American history with intelligence, dogged research and a thorough understanding of his subject. Readers are made to understand that there are people in this world who rise to greatness almost in spite of themselves. Mr. White should be celebrated for bringing this amazing man to life.
I have a copy of Grants Personal Memoirs so I was very interested to read this biography and compare the two. Grant is a fascinating figure of history and a particular favorite of mine.
This is a exceptionally done well detailed story of Grants life and work, his belief system and his morals that drove him . . It delves into the man, who he truly was, his compassion for civil rights and his successful run for the white house. This documents how he was the first President to fight the KKK and stand up for his fellow Americans by declaring civil rights for all Americans which made him a American hero for all time. . This extensive biography shows us the true nature of Grant's leadership and the qualities that drove him to succeed. Here is a look at his early life, his Presidency and his life after being President. This is all encompassing and extraordinarily detailed.
I found it a pivotal read on Grant and highly recommend this for all interested in early American History. Exceptional read . This is the definitive biography on Grant !
