I really enjoyed this installment of this series. I wasn't sure where the author would go with a second book but she did a great job! Not as teary as the first, thankfully, but just as good!
Such a great book! It took me years to finally read it and I'm so glad that I did. It gave me closure on the lives of the characters from Love and Other Unknown Variables. But disregarding the fact of the other book, this book was enjoyable even if you don't read the other book. Max is a great character, I love the fact that he's a minority. And Darby, omg. She can come off strong but she's a great character. At times I felt like she was a bitch but she was the person Becca needed.
I would first like to thank Chapter by Chapter Blog Tours for providing me with a copy of this novel and choosing me as a host for this tour, and to Entangled Teen publishing as well. This is a companion novel to Love and Other Unknown Variables, and while I have not read that novel, I feel as though the reader does not need to read it in order to understand the plot and the characters in the novel. I absolutely think this book was super cute and definitely something that anyone can enjoy if you like romantic books with a hint of the classic teen angst put in with a touch of sweetness. The characters were so adorable and lovable, and were actually some of the most realistic characters that I have ever read about. You meet Becca, this young girl who has just had one of life's greatest obstacles thrown at her at such a young age. She really learns to overcome her grief while still holding onto what has happened as something that will always be with her in the end. I'm not usually such a big fan for books in this genre, but I have to say that this book made me laugh, cry, and root for the main characters like no other. I highly recommend this book to fans of Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell, and Me Before You by Jojo Moyes. This book will give you all the warm feelings that a rom-com YA should, with the touch of contemporary that ties the entire work together in a perfect package, ready to be opened by the reader.

When I saw the tour opportunity for this book, I signed up right away because (1) I love every single book I’ve read from Entangled Teen, and (2) I’d been wanting to read LOVE AND OTHER UUNKNOWN VARIABLES since before it came out - yes, it’s been a long time! I figured signing up for this tour would “force” me to make time for LAUOV and also allow me to read this follow-up. (I should point out, you don’t *have* to read LAOUV before reading LIFE AFTER JULIET, but I think it’s very much worth the read!) Well, I read both, and I’m so glad I did! LAOUV was such a good book; even though it kind of ripped my heart out, I’m glad I read it because it was worth it. I adored Charlie and Charlotte both, and it was wonderful to get to know them. In the first book, we meet Charlie’s sister Becca, through whom Charlie gets to know Charlotte. LIFE AFTER JULIET is Becca’s story.
Becca is hurting, grieving, and retreating back into her shell when LAJ begins. I really felt for Becca as she struggled with the grieving process as well as with the inability to get close to others for fear of being hurt (being left) again. I lost my sister 8 years ago, and I still grieve every day. And I, too, now have a (irrational?) fear of losing everyone with whom I’m close. I understood what Becca was going through and thought Ms. Alexander portrayed that very well. I liked getting to meet a new set of characters, especially Max, who is absolutely dreamy! Because he also lost someone close to him, he understands Becca’s pain, but he slowly draws her back out of the shell she retreats into, and it was great to see them help each other come to terms with their losses and figure out how to live without someone so important to them.
Although this sounds like a heavy topic to be explored, it is handled with grace, honesty, and great humor, making LAJ a fantastic read. I highly recommend both LOVE AND OTHER UNKNOWN VARIABLES and LIFE AFTER JULIET to anyone who loves contemporary YA, romance, and, of course, books about drama geeks.
Overall rating: 4 stars!
Just your fun YA contemporary - great characters that are really easy to relate to.
Be aware that this book is a companion novel to Love and Other Unknown Variables, but you don't need to read it to understand and love this book! Even though I didn't read the companion book, I loved everything about this story.
The writing was perfect for a young adult novel because I found it to be very relatable and it had a natural flow of simple and complex ideas. Becca was also very easy to identify with because she is a complete bookworm who measures time by how many pages she has read.
The plotline gets an A+ because it was always engaging and thought-provoking which can be rare in a YA romance novel. One of my favorite things about this book was that the romance didn't overshadow the whole book. Becca's love interest, Max, is totally swoon-worthy and sweet beyond compare, but he doesn't become Becca's whole life. He complements her and helps her through her hard days, but never tries to fix her or control her emotions. His understanding of her grief is what helps him realize that she needs to navigate her own way through her best friend's death.
Becca learns a lot about herself and her strength, and she opens herself up to new experiences and people. All of the characters are unique and charismatic, even the mean girl, Darby. I loved that the goofy characters made the book funny and sarcastic at times, too.
Overall, a very enjoyable read and I would definitely recommend it!
Becca is still reeling from the death of her best, and only friend Charlotte. She escapes into her books, and is succesful at staying alone until she meets Max. Max pushes her to engage in the world, and Becca soon joins him in the stage crew for Drama.
The new play is Romeo and Juliet, and when Becca and Max playing around after hours leaves her with the role of Juliet, Becca will have to combat stage fright, and the mean girl who thought she was a shoo-in for the starring role.
A lovely read.
