Wake the Hollow is a young adult paranormal suspense novel by Gaby Triana. I am fascinated by the legend of Sleepy Hollow, so when I saw that Wake the Hollow was sent in the small town of Sleepy Hollow, I was all in! To me, Sleepy Hollow stories mean stories that are filled with a spooky, creepy and rich atmosphere and dark and sinister town happens. This is the perfect book to pick up on a cold winter night. Overall, I enjoyed Wake the Hollow, though I did find it a bit slow at times.
In Wake the Hollow we meet our main character Mica as she is summoned home by a cryptic letter from her mother, only to find out that her mother died (or was she murdered??) This sets Mica off on a quest to figure out what her mother wanted to tell her, who killed her and just what on earth is going on in Sleepy Hollow. Mica soon learns that she can trust no one in the town.
I enjoyed the mysterious atmosphere, but as I mentioned earlier the story did lag in parts. The slow meandering plot was at times, too slow and a bit confusing for my tastes. But anytime I felt myself getting a little bored, something else would happen in the plot or a twist/secret would be revealed and I would find myself more invested. Overall, I ended up liking this story.
I loved this book! It was so fun and mysterous! It had supernatural elements in it that I really liked. And it was twist y in ways I didn't see coming.

Wake the Hollow wound up being a perfect Halloween week read because it's set in October with leaves changing, cold weather setting in, and the town preparing for a Halloween festival. It's also perfect for our Classic Horror Week theme because in addition to Washington Irving, Mary Shelley comes up in Mica's research. I'm kind of glad I didn't read it in the summer when I first got it - I really enjoyed reading it in the same time it's set.
I liked Micaela and watching her comes to terms with her psychic gift and her family legacy. I loved the local lore and urban legends that infuse Sleepy Hollow and I wonder how much of it is real. I found the actual "Legend of Sleepy Hollow" hard to read with its antiquated flowery prose but I'm tempted to read more about its author after the fascinating mysteries in this book.
But something about the love interests in the story rubbed me the wrong way. With both of them (and with some other characters too) Mica goes back and forth on whether she should trust them and she doesn't always seem to have a reason for changing her mind. I wasn't convinced her feelings were genuine and had a few, "Wait! What?" kind of moments. And the guys were inconsistent in their behavior toward her as well. There were also some elements that could have been explained more clearly when the mystery wrapped up.
Still I loved the atmosphere Gaby Triana created here. I liked the fact that there was a second layer of mystery involving Mica's parents, though again some of that could have been explained better. I think the book would make a great TV show - it has a very Riverdale vibe. Plus, you know, ghosts. Some of which might be headless. If anybody at the CW is reading my reviews, you need to adapt Wake the Hollow.

Unfortunately, this was a DNF for me. The writing felt so... shallow. It just wasn't the one for me.
Definitely a spooky story - interesting turn of events and good flow of plot.
This was an okay story, but it struggled to hold my interest. This had an amazing cover, and a great blurb. However, the main character was awful. I was also hoping for a scary or thrilling read, but the story was so dull.
This book had so much going for it - an interesting character who had plenty of personality, and a mystery that was out of this world amazing! This fun read will keep you up all night completely engrossed in the wonderful writing!
Micaela Burgos is back in Sleepy Hollow for her Senior year to uncover the truth about her mother’s death. When the ghostly apparition from her dreams begins to appear to her during the day, stressing that she is in danger, Micaela is frightened. On the hunt for some historical documents her mother may have stolen, Micaela turns to her childhood friend Bram, who seems to have his own agenda. Then there’s Dane, her teacher’s mysterious assistant who Micaela can’t stop bumping into.
A thrilling read that has some cool literary/historical references in it. Couldn’t put it down!
first of all – i LOVE historical fiction. second – i LOVE the legend of sleepy hollow. (and totally irrelevant to anything i just so happened to attend washington irving middle school as a kid.)
i had pretty high expectations for this book given my aforementioned loves. and i was not disappointed at all! due to my own inability to manage my time very well i literally had a day to read this book to get this review out – i’m fairly certain that even without the deadline i would have finished this book just as quickly.
all of the pieces were there. there is mystery, deception, a love story, history, and a bit of coming-of-age that wove together a very thoughtful cast of characters. gaby masterfully articulates the nuances and mannerisms of each of the major players. her protagonist, mica, is a girl we’ve all known in some ways. i was invested in mica’s story and her story didn’t leave me feeling short-changed or frustrated or lacking closure.
i give this one 5/5. loved it. hope it is book 1 in a series bc i want to read more!
