A really good collection of fifteen short stories.
I haven't read much of Doctorow's work, but I thought this would serve as an excellent introduction to his work - especially because the stories are organized chronologically. I enjoyed each story, some more than others (as is to be expected from collections). Doctorow was clearly a superb writer, and the collection has made me more interested in reading his long-form fiction. Hope to do so very soon.
I've read and enjoyed Doctorow novels in the past and I appreciate his excellent writing. He does a wonderful job of setting a mood and using language to its best advantage. I wasn't really crazy about any of these stories though. I didn't particularly care for any of the characters or what happened to them. The stories were somewhat interesting to read, but maybe my expectations were too high - and not met.
