Mr. Clay woke up with no memory of who he was or where he came from. Sandy, a woman who communicates with voodoo spirits, found Mr. Clay and nursed him back to health. Now Clay is a PI who spends a lot of his free time investigating his own mystery. Things are in a decent, if unproductive, holding pattern until (as most good PI stories start) a woman walks into his office with a job. Then Clay is pulled into a mystery and adventure that (among other things) works to help him get to the heart of his own mystery.
Not my favorite work from either creator, but an overall enjoyable book! Definitely worth a look if you're into the hardboiled stuff and/or the creeps.
Net Galley did not give readers a feedback ratio when I first requested this graphic novel. However, now publishers are looking at that in determining whether or not to provide a digital ARC, so I am having to go back and fill these out for titles requested more than two years ago.
Limbo by Dan Watters & Caspar Wijngaard
Complete Limbo series
4 stars
This is a very interesting graphic novel. It’s hard for me to describe what this is about because I don’t want to give away the ending and since this is only six issues I feel like it is very easy to spoil the story. Just know that this is one of the best graphic novel endings I’ve come across. Everything is tied together in the end and while you feel jarred and confused throughout the majority of the story, the ending is worth it. The ending blew me away and really cemented how awesome this graphic novel is. I loved the bright color pattern and I was a huge fan of the incorporation of Dia de Los Muertos skeletons. It really enhanced the art and was stunning to look at. Limbo is dark, twisted, and incredibly imaginative. I highly recommend it. Plus this series is only one graphic novel, so if you hate it, you get to know the ending and don't feel obligated to read anymore.

Cover Thoughts: I love the cover. It’s what drew me in and made me interested in picking this one up.
Thank you, Netgalley and Image Comics, for providing me with a copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review.
I really loved this graphic novel. The art was gorgeous and the story really drew me in.
Clay has gotten a new identity. He doesn't remember anything of his life before nine months ago. He now works as a private investigator. One day, a singer named Ms. Bridgette asks him to investigate her boss. She tells him she saw something strange happen with him in a room with other people. He was sitting in front of a TV and a man climbed out of it. But then her boss heard her standing in the doorway behind and saw her there. She wants Clay to investigate and find out what was happening. Her boss is a dangerous man, and her request puts Clay, Bridgette, and Clay's roommate in danger.
This graphic novel is science fiction. It takes place in another world from ours. Everyone has different colour skin: Clay is blue, Bridgette is red, and Clay's roommate Sandy is green.
The font of the speech was different for different characters. It distinguished who was talking. Sometimes the speech boxes were even different colours which related back to their different skin colours.
This story had everything, from cannibals to skeletons to mobsters. It was kind of weird and strange, but in a good way, so I couldn't put the book down.

'Limbo' by Dan Watters with art by Caspar Wijngaard is a graphic novel about a detective in a surreal setting. I liked the look and feel of this one.
Clay is a detective in a place called Dedande City. Based on things in the story, it seems to be the late 1980s or early 1990s in this city. Clay has been banged up pretty good, but he takes a case from a lady named Bridgette. She doesn't like her boss, who is nicknamed The Thumb. Things feel like a normal noir story up to this point, but they are about to take a turn for the weird.
The supernatural is here as well as alive in old television channels and video tapes. The spirit world can be contacted through mix tapes. Clay doesn't know how he got here and he's got questions, but first, he has some new enemies that want to silence him forever.
I liked the story and the artwork quite a bit. The story seems a bit normal at first, but then takes a good strange twist. I liked Clay's friend Sandy. She plays a different role than usual in this type of story, and I liked her competence.
I received a review copy of this graphic novel from Image Comics, Diamond Book Distributors, and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this graphic novel.
