The wait is finally over for this latest installment of this series! It was worth the wait! From the first page it was like visiting old friends that have not been seen in years. A unique mystery, perfect characters, and the story itself was incredibly done. A book you can read again and again.
This is the first book by Dixie Lyle for me, and also my first venture into the cozy mystery genre and I have to say I was presently surprised. Typically I'm a romance and a paranormal romance reader, but I really enjoyed this book. I'm a big fan of Clue (movie and game) so I really like the who did it aspect of the book, with the humor twist, and there was just enough paranormal it to (and i'm not talking just a cute ghost dog) to keep my attention there. Lyle's descriptions were so vivid and bright, it was easy to picture everything she brought into the book, creating a movie in the mind as you read. This book was also easy to read as a stand alone. The way Lyle uses the main character, Foxtrot, to narrate, the voice and the tone, and how she describes things, doesn't leave a reader behind, and you don't feel like you've missed anything. I loved Foxtrot as the main character, and the supporting characters were just equally enjoyable. This was a fun read.
**Received an ARC for an honest review**
I received this ARC via Netgalley and St. Martin’s Press, in return for an honest review. While the fifth book in this series, it can be read as a stand-alone, but I recommend reading the others first. Diedre ‘Foxtrot’ Lancaster is the unique personal assistant to Zelda Zoransky or ‘ZZ’. Money is no object to ZZ so she enjoys throwing the most extravagant parties. Foxtrot can talk with both living and dead animals. Lucky for her, she has two special ghostly companions, Whisky and Tango, to help her solve problems like murder! When two escape artists enter into a competition and one ends up dead, there are plenty of suspects to ponder. Now, can Foxtrot, Whisky and Tango solve the murder before Foxtrot joins them in the happy-ever-after? This story combines supernatural and cozy mystery elements. Because backstories are referenced and long-time feuds continue in this book, it helps to have read the preceding books first.
Better if you start with the first in series.
Different paranormal fantasy with lots of paranormal characters and animals
A mystery suspense romance.
Voluntarily reviewed.
Deidre “Foxtrot “ is a personal assistant for the famous and eccentric Zelda. During one of her boss’s dinner extravaganzas a murder/mystery develops. Deidre, with her sidekicks, has to use her sleuthing skills to figure it all out in between dealing with a clash of supernaturals. This book is part of a series and was very hard for me to follow in the beginning ( especially the first chapter), as there are a lot of characters and their individual storylines, like her boyfriend Ben, who’s a Thunderbird. Also, Deidre has her otherworldly pets with whom she converses with, as well as conversations with you the reader which was a bit confusing and at times distracting. However, this is a new spin on a who-done-it type of story that did leave me guessing up to the end. I would highly suggest reading the previous books in this series as I think you would enjoy it a lot more, but it was an interesting mystery with a bit of a paranormal twist. 3.75 stars (4 if I had read the others first). I received an arc copy of this book from NetGalley and the publisher for my honest review.
Purrfectly Dead is the fifth book in the Whiskey, Tango, and Foxtrot Mystery series and the first I have read. Light hearted and funny, I found the book easy enough to read without reading previous ones but felt like I was missing a little of the context from the story due to past events. Deidre “Foxtrot” Lancaster is a personal assistant to zillionairess ZZ who is known for having extravagant parties and dead guests. ZZ's property butts up to an animal graveyard that is the crossroads for pets to move on to the other side. Foxtrot can talk to the living animals and the ghosts of those who have passed. She is also in love and in a relationship with Ben, a thunderbird, an ancient species that controls the weather. The current performer for ZZ's party is an escape artist who happens to be an Unktehila, a species of snake shifters, who are the enemy of the Thunderbirds. Foxtrot and her furry and ectoplasmic sidekicks must solve a murder and prevent the end of the world in a hilarious, amateur sleuth mystery that is a fun and wild read. My voluntary, unbiased review is based upon a review copy from Netgalley.
Purrfectly Dead is my introduction to Dixie Lyle and I jumped in with this fifth book in the series. I didn't feel terribly lost though there are always parts I'd have understood or enjoyed better had I read the first four books. I enjoyed Foxtrot and her sidekicks Tango and Whiskey. The paranormal sidekicks definitely added a bit of whimsy to a Agatha Christie like "who done it".
Foxtrot is personal assistant extraordinaire to the eccentric Zelda who apparently constantly hosts people on her estate so that every night is a dinner party with additional larger galas thrown in regularly. During one of this evenings, murder and mayhem ensure. I gather this is the norm for Zelda's parties though! It's up to Foxtrot, Tango and Whiskey to figure out who's the murder, what's the motive and all in time to prevent an apocalyptic showdown between the Thunderbirds and Unktehila.
The trio of amateur crime fighters was entertaining. Foxtrot is very likable and seems to keep things running so smoothly she has time to save the world. The snarkiness of her companions was fun and often funny. The entire story was clever and unique.
I give the story a solid 4 stars.
Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin's Paperbacks for the ARC.
A rollicking tale of spectral animals and a paranormal world. The dead can speak even though they are animals and much muttering ensues as they critique what goes on about them. The book is total escapist pleasure. Expect to smile often and occasionally chuckle aloud. While this level of silliness may not be to everyone’s taste, it is a purrfect day brightener for those seeking an escape from dreary news..# Purfectly Dead by Dixie Lyle #NetGalley
It’s been a long time since the last book but the minute a coworker told me the ARC was on NetGalley I requested this! It’s a really fun light cozy mystery series with a strong fantasy element to it since the plucky heroine can talk with animal ghosts and her reincarnated childhood cat. There’s some other magic things too which might be a bit of a spoiler to describe. I like fantasy, cozy mysteries and animals so what’s not to love?
If you haven’t read the series yet I do recommend reading it in order.
Whiskey, Tango and Foxtrot Mystery
1. A Taste Fur Murder (2014)
2. To Die Fur (2014)
3. Marked Fur Murder (2015)
4. A Deadly Tail (2016)
5. Purrfectly Dead (2021)
I had not realised that this was in the middle of a series. It took me a while to get my head around the characters and therefore did not enjoy this book as much as I am sure I would have done had I been familiar with the story.
I did however enjoy it sufficiently to decide to read the other books in the series.
Nice continuation of the series. The mystery kept me guessing. Foxtrot (MC) gives a lot of humor to the story as she is solving the mystery and trying to get two ancient rivals to not go to war.
Thank you to the author, publisher and NetGalley for my eARC in exchange for an honest review. I hope there is still more to come in this series.
This is the first book I read of this series and after reading this, I highly recommend reading the others first. I had a hard time following the way it was written with characters and trying to follow the story. The storyline sounded good but for me it was hard to follow
Gosh, i found this book tedious to be honest. The back and forth of the the main characters voices just became too much. It was like a badly written play all jumbled up, and gosh i tried hard to like anyone and anything about this.Maybe it's best to have read the previous books in order to have some background, as i really couldn't work out who could see the dead animals or hear them.
I do have to say the book does move along briskly.
The good storyline and interesting characters grabbed my attention from the very beginning and wouldn't let me go until the turn of the very last page!
You really need to have read the other books in this series to get the full enjoyment out of it. I struggled learning all the characters, their backstory, and foibles. There is a lot to get your brain around.
Deidre aka Foxtrot along with her telepathic cat and ghostly dog are still dealing with the nutty, off-the-wall zillionaire Z. They have dealt with more murders than the national average lately. You'd think things would calm down to general madcap nonsense but nope. Magicians disappearing, murders, mythological Thuderbirds, and a shadowy foe are all vying for Foxtrot's attention.
Along with her boyfriend, chef and Thunderbird Ben and a motley crew of characters, Foxtrot mixes the supernatural and a cost murder mystery well.
I could have done with less of the explanation of how Foxtrot goes about juggling everything- it just seemed to slow the story in my opinion. Good story and well-fleshed characters.
When zillionairess Zelda Zoransky throws a party, she means business. Assistant extraordinaire, Deidre “Foxtrot” Lancaster knows she’s in for a night when anything can—and will—happen. The evening’s festivities include a high-stakes game between two escape artists locked in a bitter rivalry.
PURRFECTLY DEAD
The magic turns tragic when one of the escape artists ends up dead. This is no disappearing act—it’s murder. The suspects include a scientist with a 3D printer, a psychedelically-impaired rock star, and a serpent-tongued ghost with ties to the Garden of Eden. Now it’s up to Foxtrot, Tango, and Whiskey to figure out which guest committed the crime before they reach they end of this deadly game of Clue. How will this tail end?
My Review
Such a fun read. Loved the characters and how the story flowed. Kept me guessing until the very end. This cozy mystery was very well written and easy to read, a delight.
Highly recommend this book to cozy mystery lovers.
I received this book for an honest review for netgalley #netgalley
This was a very sweet and yet intense cozy. I wish that I had started it from the beginning but that's okay I was able to catch up pretty quickly. Do myself in the freaking head the plot was very interesting.
The book was a fun little read but I will say that having not read the previous books it was a little hard to keep track of who the characters are and what they're talking about at times. Plot wise though the book was easy enough to follow.
Wonderful story development, rich characters, and a plot that hooks you and never lets you go. I love it when I can immerse myself within a book and just forget about real life for awhile and “become” a part of the story. This book totally delivered!
What a delight to have a new book in the series!
Fans of this series will be delighted with it.
I recommend you read the books in order as I do not feel it can be enjoyed as a standalone.
I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy of this book.
