Thank you to Ronald Balson and Netgalley for the ARC. I'm sorry to say this is my least favorite of Mr. Balson's work (and Iove his other work).
This was yet another book in series and I didn't know until after I recieved it This was just okay for me I really didn't understand it without reading the rest
My thanks to NetGalley, the author and publisher for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Oh this one will tear at your heart. It's beautifully written and deeply emotional with good characters and a plot that will surprise you. Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC.
Part historical fiction, part continuation of the lLiam Taggert/Catherine Lockhart series, this is an amazing tale of the choices that might have been made during WWII. Liam and Catherine are hired to fulfill a promise that Lena Woodward made over 50 years earlier, to find the missing daughters of her friend. While Liam researches Lenas story, Catherine must defend Lena from her son who thinks his mother is unable to care for herself. Based on a real story, this is an unbelievable tale of the heartbreaking choices that families had to make.
While the actual WW II story line of Karolina's Twins is interesting, I found the writing style to be off putting. It reads like a YA novel.
Thank you Netgalley for the opportunity to preview this ARC of Karolina's Twins by Ronald H. Balson.
Attorney Catherine, heavily pregnant and now married to her Investigator husband Liam, takes on a new client Lena. Lena is not only in her 90's, but also a survivor of the brutality of the Holocaust. Lena tasks Catherine with the nearly impossible feat of finding the twin daughters of her late friend Karolina, who perished in the war. But an added roadblock is put in the way when Lena's son doggedly does everything he can to stop this pursuit, including the claim of mental incompetence. Over the course of the story, we hear the tragic accounts of what happened to Lena and her loved ones during one of history's greatest atrocities.
This is number three of this series and so far my favorite. The story, which was apparently based off of true events, was so compelling. Balson is an eloquent writer and a wonderful story teller.
This book was pretty interesting, it kept me going from beginning to the very end. Loved it and would definitely read more from this author.
This book was an amazing read! Awesome for anyone is into World War II history and doesn't mind the modern parts with it.
Thanks so much for the ARC! I didn't enjoy this one as much as I thought I would, though.
4.3 - a WWII novel with a twist of mystery; vibrant characters, although I had some confusion because I missed one of Balson's previous novels, which had some carryover characters; highly recommended
Lena Woodward is a Holocaust survivor who wants to fulfill a promise she made to her friend over 70 years ago. She wants to find her friends twins that were lost during the war in a Nazi occupied Poland. She hires Liam Taggert and Catherine Lockhart to solve the case but Lena’s son isn’t happy about the plan. He thinks his mother is delusional and senile and wants guardianship over Len’s matters.
Even though this is the third book in a series, it works fine as a stand-alone. It was a sad book but also very good. I didn’t want to put the book down but keep reading!
We have two timelines: Modern day where Lena tells the story to Catherine and Liam, and past where we follow Lena during the war. I thought it was easy to follow what timeline we were but I’ve read that many thought was messy.
I liked Lena, Catherine and Liam but Lena’s son Arthur was a jerk. He was just concerned with his inheritance and not his mother’s wellbeing.
I loved this and I’ll have to read the previous books soon.
