Charlton is a very smart writer with a very smart magic system. Even though the book was written to be a stand alone it is actually the third book in a trilogy and it would have been great to have some "What has happened before"... There was 5 years between books 2 and 3. You forget a lot in that time. But still beautifully written. A testament to this writers skill.
