This book was—not great. It was barely good. I have no problem with sex in horror novels, but this was just poorly integrated. There were too many things going on and very little good development.
The very last thing in the book is a brief note telling the reader that the historical parts were based in fact. That bit of fascinating info deserves a much better book.
I received a digital ARC of this book from Netgalley.
I was in the mood for some scares last October, and I remembered getting this galley a few years ago. Not sure why I waited so long to read it, but I could definitely have given it a miss completely.
Say you are the owner/guardian of an evil mirror. The mirror can't be destroyed, it can only be isolated and left alone until its powers fade. Somehow, while you're looking the other way, the mirror spirits itself to an auction house and gets sold halfway across the world. When you find out who has bought your evil mirror, do you:
a) make up a really good story about how it was accidentally sold and you need it back because it's a family heirloom?
b) offer the buyer a huge sum of money?
c) be as creepy and threatening as possible, making the buyer super suspicious of you?
If you picked c, you have done exactly what the book does. First of all, what the hell is wrong with you? Do you want the evil mirror to kill several people and succeed in it's evil design? Cause that's what's going to happen.
Almost everyone in this book is too stupid to live. They make terrible choices, whether they're under the mirror's evil influence or not. Also, the mirror's powers are way too ill defined and expansive. It can show you visions of the past! Visions of the present! Subvert your will! Alter electronic documents! Really, no one in the book has a chance against the all powerful mirror.
I didn't like this book, and I can't really recommend it. There's better horror out there, friends.
Great premise. I was expecting a more fully fleshed version of Occulus, but unfortunately I felt that the execution of the book lead to it's downfall for me. It just fell flat. Around the 75% mark, I was practically dragging myself to finish the novel, which should not happen. Especially when we're suppose to be in the climax/resolution transition. It just did not work for me.
It was good, scary! i like the world as well as the characters!
I loved the idea of this book - mirror who preys on souls, but I found it fell short in so many places. I had a difficult time accepting the story. It was farfetched and seemed like it was an Erotica novel masked as a Thriller. I was unable to finish the book. I had a really hard time getting into it.
