A playwright, his wife, his manager and his new secretary. We hear from each of them in turn in alternating chapters as they go to America, and later to Greece, to cast one of the characters in the playwright’s latest work. Each has a complex relationship with each of the others, and the arrival of the new naïve secretary only muddies the already murky waters. Personally I couldn’t relate to any of them or care about their griefs and their troubles, and my goodness, don’t they ramble on. Quite frankly, I couldn’t see the point of the novel; it just didn’t seem to go anywhere. And the secretary’s chipper upper-class British voice drove me spare. Very disappointing. I’m a huge EJH fan, but this one did nothing for me.
