Loved the action! The romance is sweet and hot! And! Tori and Emery and all the members of the team are great! This one flowed a bit better for me than the first book, and I loved all of the computer hacker stuff. The group are having to deal with 3 different sets of bad guys: Russians, a gang, and some drug dealing mob type people. Some good suspense! Emery and Tori have a great connection. Love how much he wants to support Tori and will do whatever he needs to do to keep her safe and once they get together, he doesn’t hide from it; he’s all in with Tori. I said the first book reminded me of the Fast and Furious movies; this one does a bit too, and I love that! Looking forward to the next book! The premise sounds great; love second chance!
This wasn't a perfect book but I did enjoy the main characters and find myself wanting to read the next one in the series. I am going to have to chat with someone that I know that read and DNFd book one to see what that one holds but I would like to see what Gabriel has in store. If you haven't read book one I think you will be ok as I wasn't completely aware of that being out (yeah I know I'm a mess).
Emery is basically a master hacker, information gatherer and overall super-agent even though he isn't really an agent or maybe he is or ... yeah his exact ties to the FBI aren't fully clear but he's the assumed brainiac/geek/nerd but what he actually is well... let's just say I'd love to be in Tori's shoes when his attention is fully focused on her. He's got his secrets (which I wanted to know more about dammit) and past which impacts his choices in life. He's convinced that Tori isn't in to him but he's been in to her for quite a while now and when circumstances push them together he takes advantage of them. I liked his devotion to her and keeping her safe but the fact that he doesn't try to fully cocoon her made me happy. He's also quite controlling in the sex scenes we get but it is a good kind of controlling even though I sort of wish we'd gotten more glimpses of this but the story arc kept them busy outside sexy times. I look forward to seeing him a bit more in Gabriel's story but know we probably won't get much more of his backstory.
Tori was a fun character in a lot of ways. She's initially having conversations in her head with her dream version of Emery but admits that this is nothing compared to what she wants from real Emery when she finally spends time with him. She's had a crush on who she thought he was but the real him just completely does it for her. She's loyal to her twin sister, Roni, and her father but there's a part of her who wonders if she'll find someone that can accept who she is. Her history was interesting as well so perhaps we'll get more of this when/if Roni's book comes out. I liked how uncertain she was about being sexy for Emery but also enjoyed that she didn't completely obsess over it. She's who she is and luckily for her he's completely in to who she is so while she might want to have the more girly trappings the fact she doesn't have to really does it for her.
Overall a good, fast read but I do wish we had a bit more time to completely know both of them.
Shift is a great book if your really into suspense books. I think the romance was just an added benefit. I didn't really feel the chemistry between the main characters and sometimes I felt there was too much detailed description that kind of left you a little overwhelmed. The writing was great I just found myself bored with the book at times and has to come back to it a few times.
Emery Martin had been told by Iranian jewel thieves that the Russians are sending someone to Miami for a hit. It’s not them. Word is it’s from an old grudge. The jewel thieves want to get out of there and they were told emery was the man who could make it happen if they had the money. There was only two people in Miami the Russians Mob might want to take out badly enough to send a hit team instead of hiring some local thugs. Emery would work his regular, high end document forger angle, keep the thieves stateside long enough to get a warrant. Though emery was employed by the FBI as an agent and field tech, his role was much more elaborate. Emery needed to know for sure why an assassin team was coming to Miami. But the FBI didn’t any answers. Emery was mentally sorting the who’s who of the Russian Mafia in the state. Emery made it his business to know each and every face, their record and family vendettas. The FBI wouldn’t appreciate uses of their intelligence but he didn't care. Tori Chezoo was his every temptation . Emery’s life was a twisted life but hers made his appear to have been a cakewalk. Tori and her twin Roni were the daughters to a KBG spy turned American informant almost thirty years ago. They were part of Emery’s undercover FBI team, pretending to be mechanics at Classic Rides, a garage that specializes in muscle car restoration. There wasn’t even a Russian presence to think of. Why now ? What were they after? The whole reason Emery’s team was setting up in to take down the kingpin of the biggest kingpin of the biggest drug ring in South Florida. Which they had done without harm in any civilians. Their target Michael Eversaver was still in police custody. A rival street gang wanted Emery’s crew dead. Emery wasn’t a people's person preferring his bank of computer monitors to actually dealing with the living. Tori called Emery and asked if he was home and Emery told her he was headed that way. Roni was on her way to Orlando Race Battle and Tori wanted to know if Emery could keep a tracker on Roni that she wouldn’t take off or intentionally disengage. Tori was very attracted to Emery and fantasized about Emery. She also loved the way Emery handled himself.
This story didn’t keep my interest. I read about twenty percent and after that I just quit reading. This story just wasn’t for me.
