I tried to like this book but couldn't get in to it. Netgalley feedback ratios demand each book is rated even if not finished, so I will give it 2 stars as it's not the author's fault.
A gripping thriller of a book, reads at a pace and does not let up. Really enjoyed it
Thank you Netgalley for a copy for an honest review
The Devils Work by Mark Edwards.
I've read a number of books by this author and as always the book was interesting and gripping.
I enjoyed the idea of this book being set around the publishing world. It made for a great storyline. Gripping and exciting.
Sophie Greenwood always wanted to work at jackdaw publishing, but when she starts working there on probation she is made to face her worst fear on her 1st day. One of her direct employee Cassie seems to be up to something, she has kept a tab on everyone and accounts seem to get hacked. Sophie must figure out what is happening before it all comes crashing down.
Thanks to netgalley and Thomas & Mercer for providing the ARC
Wow - Mark Edwards strikes again with another, jaw clenching and heart fluttering that I just could not put down. I devoured this in one go! Could not recommend Mark’s work enough. 5 stars!
The Devils Work by Mark Edwards is a fantastic piece of writing that kept me flipping the pages till the end. The story is based on Sophie Greenwood, who gets to finally live out her dream and work for the publishing firm Jackdaw. But as soon as she enters this heavenly place.....steps straight into hell!
The book time slips back and forth, in the past we see Sophie at University and it opens us up to see why she may be suffering at the present... but thats an excellent piece of misdirection om Mark Edwards part. He always manages to knock the ball out of the park for me and this book is no different. The amount of twists and turns is stupendous leaving you on the edge of your seat in anticipation.
Thanks to NetGalley for the book to write this review.
I cannot remember the last time I read a book in one day.
Totally gripped. Absolutely loved it. Will definitely read more books by this author
Another highly enjoyable and tense psychological thriller from Mark Edwards author of one of my favourite books The Magpies. This one is set in the office environment and features Sophie who is returning to work after a long maternity break now her daughter Daisy is 4. Strange things start happening in the publishing company she works in. With lots of red herrings and twists and turns this book is guaranteed to keep you guessing throughout. 4.5 stars from me
To have the crime based in an office - genius! The workplace setting made this novel stand out from the start and seeing as the majority of life's dramas take place in the office it's such a good idea to set a crime novel in one. I enjoyed the past and present timeline which was never difficult to follow. A very well written novel with a mystery at the heart of it, characters who you're never sure whether to trust or not. In fact, when you find yourself reading a book and suspecting everyone, that's the sign of a five star story.
4 Stars from me
This clever tale is a psychological thriller which had me feeling at times as though I was on a roller coaster climbing towards the top of a slope that I knew would soon be hurtling me down the other side!
There are some really great (for great read awful, despicable, deplorable) characters within these pages who you simply can't help but loathe - are you right or wrong about them though, that is the question.
I half thought this book wouldn't live up to the blurb, I worried it might be too fluffy and possibly even a hybrid crossing the chic lit borderline; trust me, it isn't, it is a stone cold psychological thriller that will well and truly leave you guessing!
A brilliant you-will-guess-this-wrong thriller with a weirdly gothic atmosphere.
Could not really get into it much,I tried to get into it but I found it quite hard to relate to the characters no feeling of where the book was actually going to go.Quite disappointed in this one.
Oh, how I love Mark Edwards' suspense novels!! This one did not disappoint! Sophie Greenwood is the main character who finally begins her dream job at a publishing firm, only to realize after she is hired that she has a connection with an employee's family member. She keeps it secret, thinking it has nothing to do with her current position, but as she begins to work there as a replacement for another employee who went missing, she begins to see that things aren't exactly what they seem. Workers seem to be keeping tabs on each other, a dear friend gets beaten up almost to the point of death, and she ends up getting locked in the building one night working late.
The story is told well through her perspective, and to give insight into what is really happening, it jumps back to her past which shares a lot of detail, but still keeps you guessing until the end. I had some ideas of who was behind a few of the events, but I only got one of them right! And I don't know about any other readers, but I couldn't help thinking how I wanted to search the whole publishing firm building myself!
Bonus: As someone who has read multiple thriller novels by this author, I loved his nod to the draft of "The Devil's Work" that the publishing company was reading and editing, as well as the reference to the neighbors, Lucy and Chris from his book "The Magpies". And he included a magpie in this book. It felt like an inside joke between the author and his loyal fan base. :)
If you love suspense and reading about workplace craziness, this is a book anyone can relate to, and will keep you on the edge of your seat. Highly recommend!
Thank you to NetGalley, Mark Edwards and Thomas & Mercer for the advanced reader copy in exchange for my honest review. I will definitely read another book from this author and am anxiously awaiting it.
Picture this: it is a warm and sunny late winters afternoon and I am curled up in the sunshine reading the final 20% of The Devil's Work by Mark Edwards. A gentle breeze stirs the curtain and the edge caresses my neck. I shriek. Leaping from the chair I drop my Kindle and spin around to see who is going to strangle me.
It happened.
Seldom have I ever had such a strong physical reaction to a book. Mark Edwards had my heart pounding and my imagination working overtime. He even disturbed my sleep. Hence I am up writing this review at 2.30 am instead of battling sleep filled with menace and shadowy figures.
THE BLURB
It was the job she had dreamed of since childhood. But on her very first day, when an unnerving encounter drags up memories Sophie Greenwood would rather forget, she wonders if she has made a mistake. A fatal mistake.
What is her ambitious young assistant really up to? And what exactly happened to Sophie’s predecessor? When her husband and daughter are pulled into the nightmare, Sophie is forced to confront the darkest secrets she has carried for years.
As her life begins to fall apart at work and at home, Sophie must race to uncover the truth about her new job…before it kills her.
Mark Edwards has done a superb job with both his characterisation and the plot. Written over two timelines, the years 2000 and 2012, he cleverly intertwines the stories to create the maximum suspense and suspicion. He even had me suspecting peripheral characters!
This is not the first book I have read by this author, but it is definitely the best.
Thank you to Thomas and Mercer via Netgalley for providing a digital copy of The Devil's Work by Mark Edwards for review. All opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own.
I loved The Magpies so I was really, very excited to read this book. I rushed through the book I was reading before to get to it. I loved how the reader got to know Sophie Greenwood as the book went on, through smatterings of her old life, and the sense of foreboding crept up on me as it all became clear that Jackdaw wasn't what it seemed to be.
This was a great suspenseful read that I'll be recommending. Although I should have expected nothing less from Mark Edwards.
I am a sucker for psycological thrillers and this did not disappoint.
A woman who goes back to work after her daughter turns four who finds her life being turned upside down. She goes to work for a company owned by a uni friend's grandfather and from day one her life starts to detiorate.
This is a great read and full of twists and turns.
Highly recommended
A well deserved 4.5stars or 9/10 from me. My thanks to the Publishers and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this in exchange for an honest review.
Mark Edwards is fast becoming one of my favourite creepiest Authors, he sure knows how to weave a good story that'll get under your skin. This was a bit of a slow burner of a story as the pace was set by flash backs to the past and the present. With lots of twists and turns along the way, like any good psychological thriller you'll be trying to second guess what's going to happen. However, Mark Edwards has the ability to set the scene well and the tension leaps off the page at you.
Sophie Greenwood has taken an extended maternity leave, she has just started a job working in an office for Jackdaw publishing. Office environments can be tricky places to work, especially when you're the new girl and you're not quite settled. The least little issue can soon become a major problem for you. Sophie doesn't feel comfortable at work and as things begin to happen, she's not sure what to think or who she can trust.
If you've not read any of Mark Edwards books then you need to make sure you grab one soon, as you're most definitely missing out. His writing style and genre choices remind me of James Herbert and Stephen King.
First time reading a novel by Mark Edwards and very impressed.
From the opening chapter the book is filled with expected twists and turns it is a real page turner. Make sure you won;t get interrupted when reading, you are not going to want to put it down.
Once upon a time you had an ambition to work in publishing – and you knew just which publisher you wanted to work for.
But first you needed a degree – and so you went to university and met Jasmine and then her boyfriend Liam. Something strange happens whilst you are at uni and Jasmine and Liam leave – some years later hey are declared dead in a boat fire, which you find strange but...
In the meantime you have married and had Daisy who is now 4, and after time at home you have decided to go back to work and your dream job not only becomes available, but is also offered to you.
And then strange things start happening.
Your husband has issues with twitter. Your house is under attack apparently as a result.
‘Accidents’ happen at work and you begin to suspect that someone has a campaign against you – but who? Meanwhile the accidents multiply and a strange book is given to you by your boss to read and you become convinced it was written by Jasmine – but when? After all, she is dead, isn’t she?
And the suspense is ramped it and more things happen until the denouement and the plot twists and turns, and I didn’t guess the ending!
A well written novel that grabs you and you begin to feel the paranoia building as the story progresses.
This is a new author to me and a complete joy of a find. I loved the setting in a workplace office - very reminiscent of the recent The Replacement series on BBC. This book was fast moving but realistic enough to cause mild terror. I did guess about 3/4 way through who was responsible but still very much enjoyed the book. I will definitely be looking out for more Mark Edwards books.
