This is my first room by this author and I will now be reading more. The story was fast paced throughout and kept me guessing until the very end. I am familiar with Sheppey and the author described it perfectly. There was twist after twist which kept my interest and consequently finished the book in 2 evenings. The tension was built really well in the early part of the book so you couldn't wait to find out how it would conclude.
I am so pleased to have found a new author to read.
Whatever took me so long to read this book? Pure vintage Mark Edwards, I loved everything about this story. It had me on the edge of my seat from beginning to end. With plenty of twists and turns to keep you guessing, 'The Devil's Work' is a fantastic psychological thriller that I highly recommend.
A perfect 5 stars.
If you want a Can't Put It Down psychological thriller then look no further. This book has so many twists and turns I almost put my back out.
It is a compelling read which will have you guessing right to the end. I highly recommend it and give it 5*****
I am a huge fan of Mark Edwards and always enjoy his work. That certainly didn't change with this book. It was full of twists and turns and did keep me coming back for just one more chapter. However I was a little disappointed with the ending, it felt just a bit too far fetched for me. BUT that is just my personal opinion. The writing style is still brilliant and I won't hesitate to snap up Edwards' next offering the moment it is out!
A solid read.
I was kindly sent a copy of this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.
Mark Edwards comes up trumps with this amazing fast paced psychological thriller which keeps you guessing right to the very end.
Our main character Sophie lands her dream job after taking time off to raise her child but things certainly do not go plain sailing and Sophie wonders just is just is out to make things very difficult for her indeed. Are the flashbacks to her Uni days related?.
As a reader you trust nobody as the tension builds and you wonder if the author is throwing you curveballs then "boom" a fabulous unexpected ending.
A very enjoyable book for fans of this genre indeed.
My thanks go to the publishers, author and Netgalley in providing me with a copy of this book in return for an honest review.
This is a modern, fast paced, mystery thriller which is great. The main character Sophie is a married mum with a young daughter Daisy. Sophie is offered a job at Jackdaw Books and is absolutely thrilled. The storyline goes back and forward between Sophie's past friendship with Jasmine, the granddaughter of Jackdaw's owner, and present day. Someone seems out to sabotage Sophie's life, family, friends and job. Why? This is a good read.
This was my first read from Mark Edwards and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Lots of suspense and it kept me guessing until the end. I recommend this book to anyone looking for a fast-paced psychological thriller. I will definitely read more from this author.
I would like to thank NetGalley and Thomas & Mercer for supplying a copy of Mark Edwards' "The Devil's Work" in exchange for a honest review.
The Devil's Work is the second book I've read by Mark Edwards and was every bit as enjoyable as the first. We follow Sophie as she returns to work after a few years bringing up her daughter, having landed her dream job. Of course, this is the first clue everything is not as it seems - how many people are offered their dream role after being out of the workforce for 4 years? As everything starts to go wrong, Sophie doesn't know who she can trust - and what does it all have to do with her university friends?. Mark Edwards is great at ramping up the tension and paranoia - you find yourself suspecting pretty much everyone except 4 year old Daisy - even death can't rule someone out! And if something smells fishy... well that'll be the red herrings.
An enjoyable and absorbing read, with plenty of twists and turns - I found the modern day and flashback stories equally compelling, and would definitely recommend this to psychological thriller fans.
This is my first Mark Edwards book and all I can say is WOW. What a great book, I was totally gripped from the start. So many twists and turns and an ending I wasn't expecting. So many times I thought I had it sussed only to find I was wrong.
Very well-written book and the first of many I will be reading by this author.
5 massive stars from me.
After returning to work after taking time out to have a child Sophie finds a job she has always wanted to do. However it holds links to her past that she is uncertain how this will effect her.
Is there something going on in her department totally unrelated? Is it linked to the friend she had at uni? Is she losing her mind?
A fast paced psychological thriller that makes an enjoyable read.
I received a copy of this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
Another cracking read from Mark Edwards, would definitely recommend!
Mark Edwards is a bloody good writer, I eagerly await his books whether he writes on his own or with Louise Voss.
He builds tension well and slowly gives us all the information needed just when we need it to work out exactly whats happening, with characters we become invested in and stories we want to continue.
Another fantastic read by Mark Edwards. I have read all of his books so far and have been gripped by each of them, however this is by far my favourite. It was so easy to jump into this story and become so absorbed with the characters. As with all of Edward's books, they have you guessing who the enemy may be. Lots of twists and turns to make you want to continue reading well into the night. I loved the main character: Sophie. She was a likeable character and I instantly felt on her side. I will be recommending this read for my next book club! (Longer review on Amazon and Goodreads)
A gripping and fast paced read which I read in two sittings! Sophie Greenwood returns to work after a four year break when her daughter, Daisy starts school. She's been headhunted and is starting much longed for job at Jackdaw publishing. It really is her dream job.
From the very first day things start to go wrong for her. A colleague is undermining her authority, her husband supposedly sends a tweet which goes viral for all the wrong reasons and she feels unable to trust anyone at work especially when strange things start happening.. I was on the absolute edge of my seat and had decided along with Sophie exactly who was behind it..wrongly I may add!
Running alongside the present day are stories from Sophie's University years with her best friend Jasmine and her boyfriend Liam which made interesting reading and gave more body to the story. A must read.
Great read and easy to follow story line. Look forward to reading more from this author
