Ellie is a disabled vet living in China. She is separated from her husband Trey, a born-again Christian living with Lily. After visiting a friend, she sees something, or someone, she probably should not have seen. Ellie Travels all over China because of unusual messages she receives in a game. She believes she is helping Lao Zhang, but since she does not know the real identities of the players, she really has no idea. She is drugged multiple times and kidnapped but still she continues to pay the game and trust everyone.
The book has a steady to slow pace, the characters are not very developed, and it is written in the first-person point. I kept asking myself why Ellie was continuing the quest. I did not find the story believable.
This book is very atmospheric of modern day China. Flawed and shell shocked Ellie is stumbling through life and things are just happening to her. How is it all connected? It was a great story but I still had questions at the end. Hopefully the answers will be in the next book.
Many thanks to Soho Press and to NetGalley for providing me with a galley in exchange for my honest opinion.
