Great romantic read with low drama. Fast paced novel with a great build world. Perfect read for an afternoon. Arc provided by Netgalley
What happens when you have to write six articles about the one man you can't forget? When Matilda has a chance to boost her career she's ready for it, until it involves the guy who crushed her heart.
Will Matilda finally find out why Tanner did what he did all those years ago? Will she be able to deny the chemistry and keep her distance when power tools are involved? Oh, the chemistry is hot!.
I love Matilda's grandma, a bit naughty and a lot of fun. Sometimes you need people to tell you the truth and keep you laser focused. Would things have really been different?
This second chance romance is great if you love sports romance and want a fun read!.
Great second chance story.
When Matilda, a writer for a magazine, is given a story that will advance her career, she must keep her past and heart out of the job. She's assigned to do 6 interviews on her high school sweetheart who broke her heart and ruined her outlook on her life because of it. He's now the captain of the rugby team and a very sought after bachelor.
Tanner thinks he can win over Tilly like he did when they were kids. But he broke her heart 8 years ago and doesn't realize the damage he left behind with his betrayal. She can't get past the past no matter how hard he tries.
A cute read!
I waited a long time to start this book, and now I wonder why. It was well-written, hot, had very likeable characters - especially the grandmother - and I can see huge potential for the rest of the series. Maybe, as a proud Kiwi, it was my dislike for Australian rugby teams? Yes, that must have been it.

I think I read this book and failed to review it, so I just read it again 😂 What can I say, I’m a sucker for some down under rugby men! I really loved this book. Second chance stories don’t normally catch my eye, but this one was fantastic. Tilly and Tanner have such a great love for each other. I absolutely adored how Tanner was the one who was all in from the start. Tully’s inner turmoil was palpable, but in the end, that chemistry won out (or was it physics?) 😍 Playing by her Rules is a sweet, steamy sports romance that I’m here for. Highly recommend!
Received an ARC from NetGalley for an honest review.
This was such a fun read! Matilda (Tilly) and Tanner were childhood sweethearts torn apart by a kiss with an archnemesis and a scholarship. When they come back together for Tilly to write a series of articles on him, the relationship they had is silent partner in the room. They're still insanely attracted to one another and Tilly is wondering if the devil she thought he was isn't so devilish after all.
It's always fun when these stories bring in social media (love the Twitter usage) and the love scenes are always so nice and scalding in these reads. A quick read with enough emotion to keep me reading as fast as I can. Throw in some stinking hot rugby players and your girl is fully on board. Looking forward to the rest of the series.
In this book, we see the captain of Sidney smokes Tanner has his second chance with his high school sweetheart Matilda. Matilda is given an opportunity to start writing bigger stories for her newspaper but she has to write about Tanner, her ex-boyfriend with whom she had a really bad breakup. Because of him, she doesn't believe any man since and has bad luck when it comes to a relationship so she sees this opportunity for stepping up in her career and to have a little revenge. Tanner sees this opportunity to have the One that gets away back and is willing to prove to Matilda that he is changed. So the story was an ok but it felt a lack in originality, I read similar story just different plot. I really liked Tanner he was a guy on the spot with a right set of mind. Matilda was because of her insecurities a bit unlikable but I was glad that she opened her eyes. I really loved how the attraction between them escalates and later explodes. The end is cute and they have their HEA.
I volunteered to review an ARC of this book for Netgelly
Matilda and Tanner’s second chance love story in Playing by Her Rules by Amy Andrews was truly a fun and enjoyable read. Matilda landed an assignment she didn’t really want a six-part interview with her high school boyfriend, who broke her heart, and is now an elusive sports idol. Tanner avoids being interviewed by anyone in the media, wanting to avoid publicity and just play his best as he captains the Sydney Smoke rugby team. When he realizes that it is Matilda interviewing him he thinks that maybe this will give him a second chance with his high school sweetheart. Matilda plans to spill all the dirt on Tanner, especially since she believes he cheated on her. Instead she discovers he’s not what or who she expected. He has established numerous charities to give back to the community. Matilda also learns that he hurt her so she wouldn’t give up her scholarship to Sanford and a journalism career when she wanted to give it all up and follow him and his rugby career. Tanner is definitely hero material. He’s kind, passionate, caring, and loving. He never forgot her. In fact, one of the charities her established was “Matilda’s Muse”, a writing program for girls, involving local authors to assist those girls. Matilda was raised by her Gran, a real hippie-type, who taught her how to stand for herself. Tanner set the standard for all other men Matilda encountered and Tanner felt Matilda set the standard for the women he met. I loved how these two used twitter to communicate with each other, allowing their followers a peek inside their courtship. This second chance for Matilda and Tanner is finally that chance at achieving the love and marriage they weren’t ready for in high school.
Ms. Andrews wrote a wonderful, sexy and emotional story that is not to be missed. She provided a tale rich with sexual chemistry, amusing banter, fun twitter posts and endearing characters giving Matilda and Tanner a chance at finally having the future together, that they always wanted. I highly recommend Playing by Her Rules to other readers.
A good second chance romance!
I really enjoyed the set up with Matilda being forced to interview and write a series of features on a rugby player who just happens to be her ex-boyfriend Tanner.
There were a number of times the characters made me laugh, and I especially loved when Matilda wasn't afraid to be sassy and sarcastic. Tanner was sweet and kind and it was great to see how close he is with his teammates.
I do not know much about rugby, but the author does a nice job at incorporating it into the plot without making it difficult to understand for those who don't know the game.
I am looking forward to reading the rest of the books in this series!
I have zero shame when I say I needed to read this book based on the cover. Hot, tatted up rugby men. Yeah, no need to slow down when clicking on this one. Read the blurb and learn it's a second chance romance...and you've got me swooning.
Playing By Her Rules is sexy and rife with tension, lust, and unresolved anger. Which means it's a powder keg!
The Sydney Smoke definitely have me intrigued or at least the ones I've met. I look forward to watching them fall and fall hard.
I loved this book! I really like the second chance romance trope, but it can be tricky to get right. Amy Andrews got it exactly right. She was able to show that sometimes you meet the right person at the wrong time, and you don't get your happily ever after right away.
As an American, I don't really watch rugby, but I can see that I need to start. Matilda and Tanner were hot! Both accepted that they had screwed up in the past, but that things had changed; they had changed since then, and the relationship they weren't able to give each other before could be had now.
Lovely characters, lovely writing. I really enjoy everything I've read by Amy Andrews so far.
OK I know nothing about Rugby or Australian slang but dear Lord I loved this book! I love when one character is a sports star and the other doesn't seem to care. They are just who they are and don't care how "famous" the other is.
Anyway, Tilly is tasked with doing a 6-part series on her old boyfriend, Rugby star, Tanner Stone. Tanner hasn't forgotten Tilly and what he did to her but he thinks it's time she knows why he did what he did. Tilly is a smartass and I love her for it. She gives Tanner no slack just because he's famous.
Just like Never Been Kissed, I love this book in it's general sweetness. Can't wait for more Sydney Smoke!
