First line: I tried to think how many times I’d kneeled down on asphalt to read the signs, but I knew this was the first time I’d done it in Hulett.
Summary: Walt and Henry Standing Bear are in Hulett, Wyoming, home of the country’s first National Monument, Devil’s Tower, after having been called there to help investigate a motorcycle accident. It’s also time for the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, so competing motorcycle gangs, the ATF, and the femme-fatale namesake for Henry’s ’59 Thunderbird, Lola, all make appearances. Henry has one of Walt’s Sherlock Holmes anthologies with him (and yes, it definitely is part of the story), and things rapidly become clear that this seemingly straight-forward motorcycle accident is more than it appears.
Highlights: Walt and Henry are at their adversarial best once again, as Walt helps the sheriff of Hulett figure out what really happened in a motorcycle accident. And how to operate the giant military vehicle that was donated by a local wealthy businessman. Craig Johnson’s writing and storytelling skills shine as always.
Lowlights (or what could have been better): I missed Absaroka County in this book. It was interesting to have Walt and Henry in a different location, and it was cool to have them in “real” locations, but I still missed Absaroka. And I maybe could have used a little more Vic, too.
FYI: Read the books before this one first.
