The Girl from the Sea is a book that is a little outside my usual genres, but a book I enjoyed nonetheless. It was interesting seeing the book through the present tense. There was no omnipresent narrator who was telling us the story; rather it was our protagonist and amnesiac Mia who was telling the story as it was happening. I was kept on my toes the entire time and had a good time reading it. I gave it four stars just because thrillers aren't really my thing, but I still enjoyed the book very much.
Thank you, NetGalley for the online copy!
I enjoyed this story very much. I listened to it on audio and at seven hours, I listened to it off and on over a day and a bit. The story seemed a bit familiar, woman washes up on a beach and has amnesia. Her boyfriend shows up at the hospital and claims her. She heads home trying to piece her life back together but this "new woman" doesn't feel comfortable in this life. Does she dump her boyfriend? Does she go after Jack from the rowing club? How did she end up in the sea?
The story may have familiar themes, but the actual storyline had some very different twists and turns to it. As the story unwinds you think you know what happened, then boom, another clue is revealed to take you in a different direction. The story is tied up nicely even though not what I expected, and I was happy with the ending. My opinions of the characters in this story was constantly changing from pity, hatred, understanding, hatred and so on. I will be reading more by this author.
She comes to on a beach. How did she get there? What happened to her? When paramedics arrive she can't answer anyone's questions. She doesn't know her name. She doesn't know where she lives. Maybe the injury to the back of her head is causing the memory loss.
While in the hospital, her boyfriend shows up.. at least that's what he says. And he does have pictures of them together. He says her name is Mia.
But the boyfriend may not be her boyfriend. She feels absolutely no connection to him at all. She does feel a little something for Jack, a man she has met before, but has no memory of. And he is married.
She's contacted by her mother and sister .. but something is a bit off kilter there, as well.
Why does she feel that everyone is lying to her? What are they hiding?
When you don't even know who you are, how do you know who to trust?
This is an excellent psychological thriller. The suspense starts on the first page and holds fast until the very last explosive ending.... an ending I never saw coming.
The characters are credible and they all have issues. Mia's issue is her obvious loss of memory, but she seems changed from the 'old' Mia. The boyfriend gave me the willies .. he seemed awfully controlling and manipulating. Jack is almost too good to be true. Her mother and sister were greedy people who only were after her money.
Plenty of suspects .. lots of motivation for murder..but who really wanted her dead?
Many thanks to the author / Adrenalin Books / Netgalley for the digital copy of this highly suspenseful thriller. Opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.
I'm a sucker for a good mystery and this book did not disappoint! It took me a little time to get into the book, but once I was finally hooked I couldn't stop reading. The story is intriguing and suspenseful with a decent pacing and plot. Would I really compare it to Gone Girl or The Girl on the Train? Probably not. But it's definitely worth reading!
I feel conflicted about this book so my review may seem all over the place. I thought the setup was good, maybe a little unbelievable, but that's okay. From there the story was interesting, but was just missing something for me to really dive in. My biggest complaint was probably the lack of character development, so I always felt a little detached. I wanted more dimension. While I did think the twist was interesting, it sort of made me dislike the characters even more. However, if you like a good twist that you probably won't guess and don't care about dimensional character, I think this is a great book for you. I have since read another title by this author and enjoyed it, so I will continue to pick up her books when I see them.
* I received this book from the author/publisher in exchange for an honest review *
It took a while for me to get into this book. I didn’t feel an immediate connection with Mia but the mystery surrounding her accident kept me reading. The perpetrator was predictable but there was a surprising twist at the end. Overall, I enjoyed the book but I wouldn’t buy a copy for my personal library.
DNF. While I liked the storyline, I just couldn't stay focused. Maybe it felt too familiar to another book I was reading. Sorry. :(
A very enjoyable story with a great ending that I was not expecting. |Recommended.
Mia wakes up one morning with no memory of her past - she has a bad head injury and is taken to hospital. After some investigation police finds out that she has a boy friend who takes her home.
But something is not right, Mia just doesnt feel good about her boyfriend, and she is also struggling to cope with her current while she is trying to remember her past - she learns that she has a mum and a half sister, she is also stinking rich!
What follows is a roller coaster ride for Mia and the reader is taken through the path she follows to regain her memory, while she meets Jack and has a sudden recollection of memory - there's a woman who haunts Mia's memory, not being sure whether she is getting a glance of her memory or if she is hallucinating Mia must figure out what happened the day before her accident - was it a rowing accident or did someone try to kill her!
This was a good 4-star read
Superb book. I have loved everything I have read by this author, and this is no exception. Terrific!
Wonderful twisty novel. Thank you for the chance to read this one.
Wow! This is a really fun and exciting quick read. You know how pretty much every psychological suspense book now says "If you like 'The Girl on the Train' and 'Gone Girl', you will love..." Well, this is actually the truth in this case. I could not put this down and it is a mystery that hooked me from beginning to end!
This book was nonstop drama from the very beginning, but not the kind that I was expecting. From the start, readers are immersed in friendship and family drama that honestly felt so petty. Mia was such an interesting and complex character. She has some wild development and it was interesting to read about. The ending was definitely worth the read!
This is a brilliant thriller. It's the story of a young woman who is found on the beach. She is identified by her boyfriend and has lost her memory. When back at home she feels that her life and friends just don't feel right. Jack her rowing instructor seems to be the only one that fits. Can she regain her memory? Read on for a fantastic twist!
I received this ARC from NetGallery.
First of all I want to say that this book gets a trigger warning for domestic violence, gaslighting and I'd say rape by deception. This book also contains some girl hate and gendered slurs.
So this book is about Mia who has amnesia. I'm not sure amnesia really works like it does in the book, but it's plot amnesia for the book to work.
I'll also mention that this book is not supernatural, though Mia does have some hallucinations.
It's hard to review this book without spoiling all the whole plot. I will say the attempted murderer was predictable, however there is a twist to it as well.
First of all, I didn't really like how weak Mia was when dealing with Piers. Though it's good that she does finally tell him off. It's also good that when Piers comes back angry and drunk that he doesn't do the predictable thing other authors would have him do and rape Mia. He instead chooses to break her things before leaving.
I don't like the use of gendered slurs however they are not super frequently peppered through the book so it becomes a minor annoyance. A good portion of them and thrown by the "villain" of the story.
Overall I enjoyed the book, I wasn't able to predict the twist, however I knew the "killer". A good quick thriller to read if you are into psychological thrillers.
Great read...amazing twists and turns...end was total blind side!!
I read this novel some while ago, but had overlooked leaving a review.
I wasn't too sure as to whether I would enjoy this novel, as I never enjoyed 'The Girl on the Train' nor 'Gone Girl', which was referred to in the synopsis. I really enjoyed this novel, which was quite a page turner. Unusually for me, I read this novel in just over a day. Hope to read more by this author.
This book was such a surprise I thought I knew where it was heading all along to then get a complete shock at the ending! What a amazing twist! I didn't want to put it down it's so gripping. I enjoyed the description of how it felt to suddenly wake up and not remember who you. I really felt how vulnerable this left the main character it was described perfectly! It was fascinating to see how she couldn't trust anyone even herself how frightening! Brilliantly written I throughly enjoyed the whole book I'd highly recommend it to anyone who likes a thrilling, edge of your seat kind of book!
Shalini Boland has become a must read for me! This book kicked that off. Excellent mystery that I couldn't put down. Eager to read whatever she does next.
Mia can't remember, she is pulled from the sea with amnesia and a head wound.
Gradually she find people who know her as she tries to find out what happened and who she really is.
But who can she trust?
Twists and turns and a chilling finale, great!
