Witty, surprising and insightful, "Nutshell" proves there's no such thing as a "typical Ian McEwan novel".

I loved this book and read it in one sitting. I didn't know until after reading that it was a reworking of Hamlet, which definitely helped as I think I would have been more cautious in reading. This book is funny and oh so clever, our narrator's cynical observations of his mother and her lover (he is especially funny), as well as the wider political picture gained from an appreciation of Radio 4 allow McEwan to explore his themes and characters in more depth, particularly relevant when the Hamlet connection is explored. Some reviewers have struggled to believe his maturity, to them I refer to the book's core concept - which is hardly sensible!! I adored this book, my favourite novel of 2016.

Brilliantly written retelling of Hamlet, with the twist of the protagonist being an unborn baby. Another great book from Ian McEwan.
