Wow! I’m really impressed with this one. Not only gorgeous photos of the final product, but also of the ingredients nicely laid out so you know exactly what needs to be collected for every recipe.

Really helpful book to ensure that you get a good variety of salads instead of sticking to the same old same old. Even instructions on how to build your own recipe.

All in all, a real winner.

Salad in a Jar by Anna Helm Baxter

160 Pages
Publisher: Ten Speed Press
Release Date: January 17, 2017

Cooking, Food & Wine

The author explains how to design your own salad in a jar. She also includes grains, fruits and vegetables along with cooking plans. I love the detail in the order things should go in a jar to prevent wilting. She has the standard design with eight layers and gives a reason why each layer should be placed in that location. Under each recipe is a phot of the finished product along with health benefits. The book is divided into five sections.

Salad dressings
There are some wonderful recipes for vinaigrettes that I cannot wait to try especially the Thai Pick Me Up, French vinaigrette, and Green Goddess.

Raw
This section uses all raw ingredients like traditional salads with a twist. She uses avocado, sprouts, kale, pomegranates and tahini just to name a few.

Small jars
These jars are for light meals or to be served with an entrée. Most of the recipes have only a few ingredients but the combinations sound amazing for example the recipe for greens, feta, blueberries and walnuts using the French vinaigrette. Another is arugula, fennel and parmesan cheese with lemon vinaigrette.

Big jars
The big jars are complete meals and can be served on their own. I love Greek salads and never considered putting it in a jar.

Sweet endings
Who doesn’t like sweets or desserts? This section includes overnight oats, parfaits along with fruits and nuts.

These jars would be perfect for a backyard picnic, lunch in the office or really anywhere. They are quick and easy to make. Most of the ingredients are easy to find and I imagine with this list of recipes, you will be inspired to make more combinations on your own.

I started doing mason jar salads a few summers ago. I was glad to get some new ideas. While most were not for me and my tastes, this was a great book with great recipes. Quick and easy to prep. Takes the guess work out of lunch.

Salad in a jar is perfect for anyone who really is terrible at planning out what they want to eat the next day (like me).

The recipes are simple, and they make it so you can more easily plan ahead for the week, and encourages readers to try something different.

In a seeming attempt to not replicate every other recipe out there, the author used exotic ingredients not available within 100 miles to me. (Not that I indulge in a 100-mile-radius diet, but that I simply can't obtain them.)

I also found the formatting didn't work well in my Kindle reader.

I was very disappointed because I love the concept of salads in a jar.

The perfect book for busy, food-conscious people. The recipes can be done within minutes, the ingredients are healthy and the idea to just have your salad on the go is brilliant, especially when you have a busy house but still you want to maintain a healthy lifestyle. I particularly loved the recommendation of dressings, some of them not only healthy, but exquisite, such as the almond miso dressing or the tahini zinger. The recipes are easy to prepare and the book has clear directions helping even the less experienced foodie to prepare his or her perfect salad - on the go.
Recommended especially if you are looking for a great way to fill yourself with energy and fresh vitamins during the hot summer days.

(I received an ARC from the NETGALLEY)

RATING: 4.5 STARS

I have made several salads in a jar, but have done the standard: lettuce, tomato, cucumber and dressing. Summer is coming up and I want to get into salads again but need ideas and help to maintain this habit. I love how Baxter breaks it down in simple way.

First, there are the jars and other equipment and prep time. Second, is the most important thing to learn, the layers. How and when you put the ingredients in seems to be where I am lacking in making the perfect salad. Then there is the ingredients - the vegetables, seeds, grains, nuts, etc - and if you need to cook them - how long.

The next part of the book is the recipes for salad dressing, raw, small jars and big jars. And, the part that I am interested in also trying is the sweet ends. Sweet ends refer to desserts (fruit) and breakfast (porridge). I am looking forward to trying and experimenting with this book and hopefully a cleaner way to eat.

I eat salad. A lot. I know I'm supposed to eat it and I mostly like to but sometimes I get bored or stuck in the same old, same old. Thank goodness for salad in a jar. It has recipes for 68 salads and dressings and they are for the most part very tasty (which one's are tasty is just personal preference). I like that they have all kinds of salad. Small salads, lunch salads and salads for dinner that are simple and complex. and I am really happy that they have dressings without sugar. This book is physically lovely with big, vibrant pictures of the salads and their ingredients. Simple and clear directions are given.

Putting salad in a jar and layering it so that it doesn't get soaked by the dressing or mushy from various ingredients touching each other is key here. It allows me to take salad wherever I want to go. It is a perfect solution for people with health challenges who need/want to have more control of their meals across the day. It allows for freedom and flexibility and is yummy. Can't ask for much more.

Thank you to Netgalley and Ten Speed Press for allowing me to review this book for an honest opinion.

I spotted this offering on netgalley and was so interested in reading this book as this style of assembling a salad is becoming increasing popular.
I, like many people bring my own lunch to work in order to:
a. have a healthy lunch and
b. it allow me more break time for relaxation purposes.
I have to say that I really like the dressing recipes included by the author and she also does a fabulous job of detailing what order to stack your ingredients in your mason or storage jar. I plan on trying out many of the salad and fruit recipes. This book contains excellent photos of the ingredients used and also the assembled jar. It appears to be virtually foolproof.
I suspect the author isn't American as she listed arugula by it's more European name of rocket but I think this book will certainly appeal to American cooks.

Salad in a Jar is the best recipe book I've seen in a long time. Each recipe consists of two pages: The first page illustrates the ingredients, and the second page shows how to put them together in a jar and what the final product looks like. I'm not a big raw veggie eater, but this book makes me want to go out and get a bunch of veggies and try some of these recipes. The recipes are easy and also include a short list of benefits of the included ingredients. The photos make everything look so delicious, make me want to try some of these new combinations. And, this book doesn't just contain a handful of recipes. it has 11 different dressings, 6 raw salads (2 pt jars), over 20 small jar salads, over 20 big-jar (meal size) salads, and several dessert or breakfast meals. What a great find! I love this book!

I got an early copy of this book through NetGalley and it's really cool! It's like flipping through recipes on Pinterest without all of the effort of searching for the pins.

Or, in other words for us older people, it's a cookbook printed on paper and it's filled with great healthy options for salads. :)

There are wonderful dressing recipes and many ideas for healthy, east lunches for work (or wherever you are when you need to eat). I think everyone will love this book! The pictures are beautiful and it's pleasant to look through! Read it!

Have you got the desire and a few extra minutes to prepare a quick and nutritious lunch? This is one cookbook that I can honestly say will satisfy your need to eat healthier and not demand too much of your time. Salad in a Jar gives its readers ideas and solutions that are not only tasty, but relatively easy to prepare. The beautiful illustrations and simple instructions make this book a must-have for anyone wanting to shake up their lunch routine.

What is really amazing to me about Salad in a Jar, is the method that Helm Baxter describes to create these salads. After you understand the simple layering technique, any recipe can be used. This is very exciting to me, as there are many times that I have tried to take a salad for lunch and found that it was soggy or just not as fresh once lunchtime hits.

Also, the 10 minutes that it takes to prepare the most complicated recipe is quite doable and can be sped up with a little preparation the night before. There are so many different types of recipes that vegetarians and those who prefer a little more protein in their meal will be able to find something enjoyable to prepare. The ingredients for the salads and dressings that I created were all sourced from my local grocery store and were quite reasonably priced. Considering that I would spend more on take-out, this is considerable savings.

A gorgeous recipe book that is packed full of ideas and recipes for eating well, Salad in a Jar is my new favourite cookbook. I have always looked forward to the lunch hour, but knowing that I will have something delicious and good for me is a bonus. If you are looking for a new and easy way to change up the way you do lunch, I highly recommend Salad in a Jar.
