Thank you to the author, the publisher, and NetGalley for a free ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review! I'll start by saying if I hadn't already read S.J. Watson's Before I Go to Sleep, I would have liked this book a lot more, but it felt like I'd read it before. That being said, a remote island setting, amnesia, marine biology and diving, and creepy characters all come together to make for a fun and twisty thriller. The story is a bit far fetched, but a fun escapist beach read for the summer.
Boring and slow. My attention kept wandering as I read this book. Not recommended.
I received a free copy of this book, from the publisher and author, via NetGalley, in exchange for an honest review. Thank you to the publisher, Touchstone, the author, A.J. Banner, and NetGalley.
Like many other reviewers have stated prior to this review, it was very predictable. This fact has me place this novel at 3 stars. Even though it was predictable, it was also very well written and very fast paced. The author was very descriptive of the environment, but lacking in the typical tension and suspense seen in this genre.
Overall, a good read. I would recommend it to those who like this genre.
This book was just ok. Lacked good characters and a more suspenseful story line.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for an Advanced Reader Copy in exchange for an honest review. I had high hopes for this novel of amnesia and suspense. Unfortunately, it fell a little flat for me. I may be suffering from Gone Girl Overexposure.
Set on a lonely island in the Pacific northwest, The Twilight Wife is a thrilling mystery that will leave readers turning pages.
Kyra Winthrop's diving accident turns her world upside down. Despite the fact that her loving husband, Jacob, patiently helps her heal, she can't stop questioning the events of the tragedy. As memories unfold, Kyra grows more and more unsure until everything she thought she knew about her life is called into question.
I won't lie. The mystery is inventive and leaves you guessing; however, my favorite part of the book is the setting. Banner does an outstanding job of describing the lonely island and its quirky inhabitants. Had this been a travel book, I would have packed my bags and headed straight for Kyra's cottage.
But I digress. Kyra was a good protagonist - likeable and smart. Although she was, at times, a little too trusting, it was easy to understand why she would be this way given her circumstances. I was meh on her husband, however. I wanted him to have more personality, especially at the beginning of the book.
My only other complaint was that I guessed at what had happened before Kyra did (although, not by much). I would have liked a little more surprise.
All in all, however, this was a very enjoyable read. I like how the author was able to put me directly in the middle of the story. I really felt that I was there. I look forward to reading more of her books in the future.
This is an interesting mystery with a few unexpected twists that will keep you turning pages long into the night.
The first couple of chapters in this book drew me in and I was hooked by the third. I liked the main character right away and wanted to know what was going on with her. After she began discovering that things weren't as they seemed, my curiosity grew and the pages started flying by. This is a very exciting book from the beginning and only gets better as you get farther into it.
I love psychological suspense books that keep you guessing at what is really going on all the way to the end, and this one does that well. Even when you think you have it figured out, there is still something left to be revealed around every corner.
If you love the kind of books where you and the main character have to figure out the mystery together, this would be a good one to pick. Recommended.
This review is based on a complementary copy from the publisher, provided through Netgalley. All opinions are my own.
I really heard a lot of great things about this book. I would like to think the publisher for giving me a copy of the book. The book starts off great. A young married woman, has a scuba diving accident, and loses four year of memories. She is now living with her husband on a not highly populated island. She begins to slowly remember small pieces of her life. I feel the author give away too many clues. I had the ending figured out 100 pages before the book ended. The ending was flat. I rarely give bad reviews but this book just wasn't that great.

In my opinion this story had great potential but the author didn’t supports Kyra’s decisions. I was more engaged in the book at the beginning. As the plot unravels and the reader learns the back story I found it unbelievable and couldn’t relate to Kyra.
In my opinion she is not the victim she wants to believe she is.
Much of the deception Kyra doesn’t recognize I found obvious from the start.
I am rarely surprised at the underlying story and it is such a joy when I am. This is a sit down and read it until done book, because it takes a few turns before the ending you begin to hope for.
Thanks so much for the ARC! I didn't enjoy this one as much as I thought I would, though.
The book just didn't grab my attention. Felt very flat and uninteresting.
I had high expectations for this novel as it was listed as adult fiction in the psychological suspense area. The plot line progressed simply. There was no real depth to the characters. Halfway through this I was like, wait, haven't I read this before? When I reached about 60%, I was not into the book, however, I trudged through the remaining chapters. The ending was too rushed and no real explanation of the aftermath of the climax.
Would I read again? No. Would I recommend? Probably not.
An enjoyable but fairly predictable read. There are so many movies and books with a similar story that kept echoing in my head as I read. But the book was atmospheric and I was entertained so I give this a solid three plus stars. I do love psychological thrillers and hope to read many more from the author. Thanks to Netgalley for the chance to read this book.
Again, another great suspense book by A. J. Banner.
And I was surprised by the ending.......
Kyra Winthrop is recovering from a traumatic brain injury she received from a diving accident. Her husband Jacob is there to help her recover while staying at his family's island house. As she begins to have memories and flashbacks she starts to realize things aren't as they seem.
In the process of trying to find out what's real, the author takes us on a some exciting twists and turns. The story flows very well and its interesting, but lacks the intensity of a thriller.
Wow! I read this book in one sitting, it was so good. The storytelling is sublime and really got you into the story. I will recommend this for the book clubs
Because I cannot get enough of suspense novels lately, I am very excited to start The Twilight Wife by A. J. Banner this weekend. This is getting great reviews and there’s nothing like a page turner on a rainy weekend, am I right? Here’s the premise:
Here’s the premise:
Thirty-four-year-old marine biologist Kyra Winthrop remembers nothing about the diving accident that left her with a complex form of memory loss. With only brief flashes of the last few years of her life, her world has narrowed to a few close friendships on the island where she lives with her devoted husband, Jacob.
But all is not what it seems. Kyra begins to have visions—or are they memories?—of a rocky marriage, broken promises, and cryptic relationships with the island residents, whom she believes to be her friends.
As Kyra races to uncover her past, the truth becomes a terrifying nightmare. A twisty, immersive thriller, The Twilight Wife will keep readers enthralled through the final, shocking twist.
This book has been described as fast-paced and a quick read. I am looking forward to it!
I really wanted to like this book.
At times, the prose was incredibly poetic and I found myself immersed in the main character.
However, very quickly I knew what the "twist" was and was just waiting for everything to go down. There wasn't a really satisfying ending to the story, and all the characters besides the main character felt flat and like they were a means to an end.
It was all right, but as far as suspense novels go, there are better ones out there.
