A.J. Banner's The Twilight Wife is an enjoyable psychological thriller. With the help of her perfect husband, Kyra, an ocean biologist, is recovering from a serious diving accident. The head trauma she received has left her memory of the past few years just out of her grasp and her husband is trying to help her rebuild their lives together. However the more Kyra remembers on her own, the more questions she is left with.
The Twilight Wife is a relatively quick read, due to writing style, but also lack of significant story depth. There are a few plot points that are a bit too convenient to feel authentic to the story, but overall this is an enjoyable, light read that will keep you interested.
I received this ARC novel from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you Netgalley.
Kyra is suffering from severe amnesia after a diving accident. Living on an isolated island off the West Coast with her devoted husband Jacob, Kyra struggles to remember her past as well as build back her relationship with her husband, which is strained at best. He is a stranger to her. Slowly she starts to build her strength back up and get back to what she loves doing - research on marine biology but her relationship with her husband remains strained. Even though she cannot remember much, she starts having flashbacks of a man called Aiden and immediately feels troubled - who is he to her? Thrown in to the mix are unusual conversations with the island's residents - many of whom have their own secrets..
I started to figure out the plot. It must come with reading so many psychological thrillers, where nobody is as they seem. Still, even though I thought I had the plot figured out, this one had an usual twist at the end.
Read in about three evenings - I'd highly recommend this book.
Great read! The author tells a great story. I look forward to more from this author.
WHAT I LOVED:
Good story, Interesting premise. Why would she keep doubting their relationship?
Loved the descriptions of the island. I am now dying to visit it.
Great supporting characters, each seemed to have something to hide and possibly know more about her background than they are letting on.
Touchstone and NetGalley provided me with an electronic copy of The Twilight Wife. This is my honest opinion of the book.
34 year old marine biologist Kyra Winthrop lives a quiet life on Mystic Island with her husband, Jacob. Having suffered from severe memory loss due to a diving accident, Kyra has to rely on her husband's recollection for most of her past few years. When Kyra starts to have flashbacks that do not coincide with her husband's view, will her dreams and nightmares finally help her to see the truth?
The Twilight Wife reminded me of a made for television movie, with all of the psychological aspects and suspenseful and thrilling moments. The plot seemed too familiar and I was pretty well certain of the outcome early on in the book. The author gave the reader too many clues, as the story was too transparent. I did like Kyra as the main character, as her strength and determination in her search for the truth came through well. The Twilight Wife was a quick read and might be liked by those looking for a good psychological suspense novel.
I am so glad I took the time to read this book, I absolutely loved it. Krya Winthrop is a marine biologist who is struggling with memory loss after a diving accident, now she is home with her husband who is waiting on her hand and foot. The couple lives on a secluded island with only a few close neighbors. Kyra starts to have flashbacks of her life and is trying to put the pieces together from the last few years. Kyra starts to become suspicious of the life she has and wants to dig deeper, yes she has a loving and caring husband but is he being too overprotective and keeping pieces of the past a secret?
From page one to the last page I was completely hooked and absorbed into this book. I never felt like there was a dull moment and needed to keep reading to find out what in the world was going on. This book was full of twists and turns that kept the reader on their seat. I loved the way Kyra’s flashbacks flowed well into the story; it was a natural progression that did not seem rushed. I was completely satisfied with the ending and look forward to reading more by A.J Banner.
A huge thank you to netgalley & the publishers for giving me the chance to read this thriller.
This psychological thriller focuses on a marine biologist who has lost some of her memory due to a diving accident. She seems to have a perfect life with a loving and doting husband so why is she having flashbacks of being intimate with his best friend? This storyline tells a tale of the lengths someone will go to get what they want even if it means hurting people you care about. The writing was engaging but the plotline was somewhat predictable.
If you read me regularly, you know that I love suspenseful books, especially those where someone has to ask themselves: am I crazy??
This was a great read. I read it in one day when we were on our cruise in the Bahamas. It’s one of those “I just can’t stop reading!” novels. I had not read this author before but I will look for other titles by her. Someone needs to turn this one into a movie!
Thank you, Net Galley and Touchstone Books, for my review e-copy!
A compact but complete novella in the manner of "Before I Go to Sleep" (SJ Watson). A woman who was in an accident gradually suspects that all may not be as normal as she had thought. A thrilling and suspenseful plot.
Twilight Wife had me hooked from the beginning. Kyra, a young woman who was in a bad diving accident cannot remember her life from the past four years. Her husband, Jacob is desperately trying to revamp their life by moving to a small, remote island where internet access is spotty and even less people to ask questions. Slowly Krya pieces together bits of information and delves deep into her memory for some shocking realizations. AJ Banner slowly unravels the horrible truth throughout the fast=paced psychological thriller. I would definitely recommend this to fans of Gone Girl, The Couple Next Door, or I Let You Go.
This was a fast paced novel with so many twists you have no idea which direction the book is heading. I liked the idea of an amnesiac who has no idea what's going on or who to trust. I liked the descriptions of the island, as well. It was a decent thriller to read on a cold afternoon and good enough that I would check out this author again.
**Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Thick with unspoken secrets, unknown secrets, nothing is real.
It seems like Kyra Winthrop has everything any woman would want. A husband that adores her, living on island with a magnificent view, a past career that was satisfying. The only thing she is she can't remember the last four years of her life. Jacob her husband assures her that she will remember in due time but the memories that she does seem to have does not jive with what her husband has been telling her.
Everything seems off but Jacob keeps telling her that their marriage is fine and to take things slow. She seems isolated even though she correspondences with her best friend thru email but that doesn't seem right as well. Kyra begins to take her life into her own hands and when she does, will she actually lose it?
A plot that is better suited going into without knowing what is going to happen. I loved being surprised by every page and the turning point became a twilight thriller.
A Special Thank You to Touchstone Publishing and Netgalley for the ARC and the opportunity to post an honest review.
The Twilight Wife is another story about a woman who gets in an accident, loses her memory and doesn't remember her husband and past.. As she slowly recovers her memory, she is shocked to discover what she finds out.
. Though the story moderately held my interest with a few twists, there just wasn't enough originality in the plot. It seemed like a variation on books that I have read before. Because of this, I cannot recommend the book based on UnderratredReads' standards.
I would like to thank NetGalley and Touchstone Publishing for the copy of The Twilight Wife
by A.J. Banner. This book was a mystery, as the main character gradually regains her memory, following a head injury incurred during a diving accident. As she pieces together a marriage and a life on an island, that doesn't quite feel right, the story takes some unexpected turns.
Ooh, another good thriller! I loved that Kyra was a super smart scientist and it was only her brain trauma that kept her from seeing the truth about her life. I wish we could have had a few more supporting characters but overall, a really interesting psychological thriller with lots of twists and turns.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It's hard to read about someone piecing things together and knowing it's not looking good, but it's also very intriguing. I thought this book had a great concept, something you don't see constantly in thrillers, but still was able to fulfill my want for a thriller. I knew each time she remembered something new, her husband wasn't the caring care giver he pretended and was screaming leave. If you love thrillers, where info is giving in spurts and you learn the same time as characters, this is your book. I'll definitely be reading more by this author!
This novel makes you think. When your mind betrays you who can you trust... old friends, your husband...your family. I enjoyed this novel because the questions unfolded as quickly as the answers. It was fast paced but well paced and let readers make up their own minds.
I enjoyed the follow up but still have questions that I hope would have been answered --- so they have the baby? Is it theirs? Where is Linny? What happens to The characters after?
I hope there is a follow up.
If you lost your memory, how would you know if others were telling you the truth about your past? This was a good mystery that was entertaining.
The main character Kyra, confused after diving incident and trying to figure out what happened. The story told from one person's perspective, other characters didn't have their voice. That's unfortunate, because it would've been interesting to hear Jacob's thoughts and what was his relationship with the friend from his childhood. So a throwback to past would’ve been interesting to read. The characters were not very interesting to be honest; they were not strong and did not have charismatic personalities. I noticed that, if a male character looks perfect in the pages, there is something not quite right with him, in this case the same, Jacob was too perfect. Even though Aiden should’ve been one of the important characters, his actions were nonexistent, even at the end he was the most passive one.
I really enjoyed that in every chapter there used to be at least one memory coming back. The suspense was really well thought through, giving those recovered memories like little sips of water in the desert. The whole plot is not very original, I saw couple of films with the same principal, but the suspense kept it interesting and hard to put away. There is very visible touch of author's life in the book, as she lives by the ocean. There are lots of terms of marine biology in there, which got me looking up some terms because I never faced them. All the suspense throughout the book was nicely rewarded at the end of it, I really enjoyed it and it still left you hanging with some unanswered questions. It had a lot of turns and twists which didn't leave u bored and kept the book interesting.
Kyra has suffered a head injury while diving and is unable to remember any details of the last four years of her life. She and her husband Michael have moved to a quaint and peaceful seaside community in the Pacific Northwest. There are very few neighbors, usually no dial tone on the phone and extremely unreliable internet. And not one single cell phone.
The plot comes together really well and got me hooked to keep reading. About 2/3 of the way thru, it became weak and a bit tiresome. As I finished the book, I reflected on ominous comments that were said by various neighbors throughout the book. Nothing ever came of those comments. Nothing tied back to the furtive warnings and sly looks. In the end, everyone was as surprised as Kyra to learn the truth. The final events Kyra went thru are weak and somewhat confusing; a lot of dashing from one spot to another, then one second swinging an oxygen tank and the next simply falling helplessly and being attacked.
Kyra’s descriptions of her love for her husband get a bit sappy. I’ve never been one for romance novels and the visions in her head are straight out of one. I still enjoyed the read but was a bit let down at the end. I would definitely want to read more from this author, though.
