I LOVE when I find a book that blows my mind. The Twilight Wife did exactly that.
Excellent story! Looking forward to reading more by this author!
Kyra has some gaps in her memory after a serious diving accident. Her husband Jacob seems happy to have her alive and well, but a bit irritated at her confusion and frequent questions about their past together. She doesn't remember marrying him, and has images of falling into the arms of Jacob's best friend, Aiden. She becomes obsessed with wondering if she had been unfaithful. Kyra turns to the internet to get some answers, but finds nothing but broken links and bad server messages. How will she ever find out who she is and what happened to her?
I guess technically, there is a “twist” in this book. It seems like that's the kind of books this is trying to be. What I can't understand is how Kyra doesn't see this "twist” coming! The whole thing is just so cheeseball and soap opera-y. This book does have a few things going for it. The plot moves quickly, and there is a sense of urgency to find out what happens. It’s just very underdeveloped and pretty silly.
The Twilight Wife by A.J.Banner is a good psychological suspense read. Not exceptional, not new, but enjoyable nonetheless. Kyra Winthrop had a diving accident during which she hit her head and lost four years of her memory. Her husband Jacob, is doing all he can to help her through this troublesome time with patience and devotion. But the memories that come back to her don't mesh with what he's told her. What's real? What's not? Who can she trust? Jacob smells fishy from the beginning, but is this reality, or a red-herring thrown at us by the author? You'll have to read it yourself as I won't give any spoilers here!!
Many thanks to NetGalley, A.J. Banner and Touchstone for allowing me to read this book in exchange for an honest review.
This was a great read. A woman who has lost her memory from a diving accident. She keeps having dreams and has to ask her husband what is real and what isn't real. They are on an island that is sparsely populated with a few close friends. Some of whom knew her before the accident.
While she is trying to put the pieces back together, she finds out that all is not what it seems to be.
The jaw dropping ending is one that I definitely did not see coming. This book was one that I could not put down as I wanted to know what happened in the water as well. Were there more than just two people down there? What really happened? And was it an accident? This was one creepy story, well worth my time. I loved it.
Thanks to Touchstone for approving my request and to Net Galley for providing me with a free e-galley in exchange for an honest review.
I wondered if this book would be as well written and engaging as The Good Neighbor, and it definately was. While I enjoy most suspense books, it is rarely that I am unable to figure things out prior to the final pages. I am happy to say that was not the case with this one. This delight was full of twists and turns that kept me guessing and wondering. The main character Kyra is well written and strongly developed. I was surprised by the ending and loved the fact that I had not figured this one out. Very good read for a bookclub as well as anyone who loves suspense.
Thank you NetGalley and Touchstone for the opportunity to read this book in advance of its release in exchange for my honest review.
Not quite living up to the spectacular reviews I had previously read, an interesting but not life changing book.
I received a copy of The Twilight Wife through NetGalley for an honest review. This could have been an excellent tale. Unfortunately it felt more like a Lifetime movie plot. So much that should have been fleshed out was not, and though the plot interested me, I was working to get to the end.
Don't let my three-star review fool you: I did enjoy this book. For all its faults, The Twilight Wife was an engrossing story and a very quick read, both important for a thriller. So why only three stars?
First of all, despite my feeling that this was a great story with mysteries to be uncovered, I kind of felt like I'd read it before. Specifically, I felt like I was re-reading S.J. Watson's Before I Go To Sleep. And I felt this way from the very beginning. Maybe I'm just convinced that any book about a wife losing her memory is basically the same. I don't know. In any case, the similarities were definitely there and hard to overlook, especially because it made some of the key plot points a little predictable for me.
Second, through much of the book, Kyra's memory loss/amnesia situation just didn't feel very genuine to me. Frequently, Jacob would get annoyed with her for forgetting things they'd already discussed, but every time she remembered something on her own, it seemed to stick with her. Maybe it was the medication stopping her from making new memories, but it still struck me as odd that she'd remember and fixate on certain things while failing to remember actually going somewhere just a week before.
That said, I really did enjoy reading this, and while I definitely felt the lack of originality in overall concept was an issue, I still wasn't entirely sure exactly what happened. The story drew me in right away and I wanted to get to the bottom of Kyra's accident and memory loss. I wanted to figure out what the deal was with the different men she had memories of and why she had lost only four years (a weirdly specific amount of time) of memories. These questions kept me reading and I finished the book in two days' worth of short(ish) reading sessions.
So, would I recommend reading this? Well, that depends. If you've never read Before I Go To Sleep or you have but you don't really remember it, then definitely go for it! It's a great book if you don't have another similar book in mind to compare it to. If you have read it, though, The Twilight Wife might be a little too predictable for you, and unless you're really good at overlooking predictability in a thriller, I'd skip it.
I do have to say I loved this book. I really couldn't tell where the book was going, but knew there was a sinister plot there. Well worth the time to read, and it was hard to put down!
I really liked this book and read it in a little over a day. It was a very intriguing story and kept me in suspense until the very end. The story is about a young woman who loses her memory after a diving accident. Things are not as they appear to be. The telling of the story was very descriptive. The author describes the players in the book in much detail and it is easy to imagine them and their personalities as the story progresses. I would definitely recommend this book I look forward to reading more books by this author.
What if my brain is choosing to block out not trauma, but something else altogether? Impossible. I have to dismiss the thought. I have to believe what Jacob is saying. The conversation was all in fun. Just because someone talks about murder, doesn’t mean they intend to actually kill someone.
Kyra suffered a traumatic brain injury following a diving accident. She has no memory of the past four years of her life and she struggles to form new, lasting memories. Her husband, Jacob, has been put to the task of reintroducing her to her life through shared experiences, friends and photo albums kept at their home on the San Juan Islands in the Pacific Northwest.
Desperate to regain her past, Kyra begins to search the island for clues to help corroborate her husband's story. She revisits places her and Jacob frequented and meets with friends they shared with the hope of sparking recognition. At the urging of one friend she begins to see a therapist- someone to whom she can confide her deepest worries and thoughts.
As I leave her office, I should feel calmer, less confused, and better equipped to face the mystery of my past. I do, in a way. But I also feel as though my memories stop short, before the storm, at the edge of a precipice leading down into darkness.
Kyra attempts to pursue something akin to a normal life. She returns to the ocean- her haven of sea creatures that she studied for years and one of the few things she can remember. She tries to reacquaint herself with Jacob and she can't help but admit to the attraction and companionship she feels. She can't ignore the nagging suspicion, either.
I kiss him back, the way I know I have before, many times. His lips taste familiar. I’m enjoying his touch. I want him. I wanted him before. But something went wrong between us. And I suddenly remember thinking, What secrets would I hide to save my marriage?
A discovery leads to a rapid unraveling and the reveal that proves everyone has their secrets. The Twilight Wife is a solid thriller with the perfect combination of emotional depth and suspense.
Unfortunately I am unable to finish the book. It's a little slow going for me and really isn't holding my interest. Thank you for the opportunity.
I've been on the search for a good mystery/thriller, but sadly this one was not the one to hit the mark for me.
In this mystery thriller, we follow Kyra Winthrop after she wakes up from a diving accident with no memories of the past four years or her life. All of the sudden she has a loving husband of three years and lives on a completely new island with new friends. As time passes, Kyra begins to have flashbacks that begin to suggest that her new life may not be quite what it seems.
I'll admit, based on the summary of this book I should have known that this mystery would not stump me, that I would have the plot semi quickly figured out, as soon as I started reading. Despite this, I was still hoping for a thriller that would shock me and leave me unable to put it down.
My biggest problem with this book was by far the fact that the ending did not surprise me. This happened for two reasons. 1) The plot was not super original and I felt like I have read things like this before. 2) The author did her best to leave clues throughout the novel so that when the big reveal happened I would be like, "Oh wow, that makes so much more sense!", but to me, the clues were obvious from the start. There was no subtlety in any of the clues what were left for me. Perhaps a less seasoned reader of mystery novels would miss them, but as a lover of all thing mystery, these popped out as obvious to me right away. The fact that it took Kyra so long to figure it out bugged me and made me believe she wasn't super smart.
My second largest problem with the novel that I will try to be brief on was that it felt like a lot of the novel was a game of whodunnit with every character acting as a small prop for Kyra to investigate. So few of the interactions felt genuine to me. None of Kyra's relationships felt real enough to believe.
Overall, if you're looking for a cheap thrill and tend to be shocked by mystery novels, I'd say give this one a go. I'm not sad that I read it, but it will not be ranking highly on my list. Otherwise, I'd say look for a higher level mystery.
Thank you Netgalley for providing me with a copy of this novel in exchange for an unbiased review.
